President Donald Trump has granted Governor Laura Kelly’s request for two federal disaster declarations for the state. Public Assistance was approved for storms that impacted Kansas June 4-15 and June 18-30 with damages caused by severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes, and flooding. Multiple counties sustained damage to utility infrastructure, roads, and bridges.
“This federal assistance will provide critical resources to help Kansas communities repair damaged infrastructure and move forward with recovery,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “I appreciate these resources which helps Kansas communities access the support they need to recover, rebuild, and become more resilient.”
Counties that were impacted by these storms include: Atchison, Brown, Butler, Cherokee Cowley, Crawford, Decatur, Dickinson, Edwards, Geary, Gove, Harper, Haskell, Hodgeman, Jackson, Lincoln, Logan, Marshall, Mitchell, Morris, Nemaha, Ness, Osage, Osborne, Ottawa, Pawnee, Pottawatomie, Rawlins, Rice, Riley, Rush, Russell, Saline, Scott, Sheridan Sherman, Stafford, Stanton, Sumner, Thomas, Wallace, Wabaunsee, and Washington Counties and the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska and the Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas.
The declaration allows state and local levels of government, as well as certain private nonprofit organizations that provide vital and essential services, such as rural electric cooperatives, to apply for Public Assistance funds for emergency and permanent work for the repair or replacement of infrastructure damaged by the disaster.
