Kansas City officer shot during traffic stop has died

KANSAS CITY—The police officer shot during a traffic stop on Tuesday morning in North Kansas City has died, according to a statement from the Clay County Sheriff's Department.

Just after 10:40a.m., Officer Daniel Vasquez, 32, stopped a Ford Taurus for an expired temporary license plate near 21 Street North and Clay Street, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The driver exited the vehicle and began firing on the officer causing serious injury, according to the patrol.

EMS transported Vasquez to North Kansas City Hospital and he was later transferred to KU Medical Center where he died.

After the patrol issued a Blue Alert, for when an officer is seriously injured or killed, a search for the suspect's gray Ford Taurus lasted a couple of hours.

The suspect eventually turned himself in, according to the sheriff's department. Kansas City Police is now in charge of the investigation. Police will release additional details on the suspect after charges are filed. 

 Vasquez joined the North Kansas City Police Department in 2021.

KANSAS CITY —The search for a suspect who shot a police officer in North Kansas City Tuesday morning is over. Just after 1:30p.m., the Missouri State Highway Patrol confirmed they had a suspect in custody.

According to the patrol, the officer stopped a Ford Taurus for an expired temporary license plate just after 10:40a.m near 21 Street North and Clay Street.

The driver exited the vehicle and began firing on the officer causing serious injury, according to a statement from the patrol.

EMS transported the officer North Kansas City Hospital and he was later transferred to KU Medical Center, according to the MSHP. 

Authorities have released no additional details on the officer's condition or the identity of the suspect.

KANSAS CITY—The Missouri State Highway Patrol in north Kansas City issued a Blue Alert late Tuesday morning for a white male with brown hair driving a gray Ford Taurus with a temporary Missouri license plate 03GU43.

Just after 10:40a.m., the officer initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle near 21 Street North and Clay Street in Kansas City. The driver exited the vehicle and began firing on the officer causing serious injury, according to a statement from the  patrol. The vehicle was headed westbound on 21st Street from Clay Street, according to the alert.

A Blue Alert is issued when an officer is seriously injured killed.
