Kan. woman living in garage apartment identified as fire victim

SHAWNEE COUNTY —The Office of the Kansas State Fire Marshal is investigating a fatal fire in a detached garage converted to a living space in Topeka and have identified the victim as Jennifer G. Bowers, 56, of Meriden. 

Just after 2a.m. Thursday, fire crews were dispatched to a fire at in a detached garage behind a home at 1435 NW Jackson Street in Topeka, according to city spokesperson Gretchen Spiker. 

Crews found heavy fire and smoke coming from the garage and while performing an offensive fire attack, found an adult victim inside the garage who was deceased.

The fire was quickly contained and no other structures were damaged.

The garage was converted into a make shift residence and Bowers was living in the space.  The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to Topeka Fire Department spokesperson Rosie Nichols.
