SEDGWICK COUNTY— The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 30-year-old Wichita man early Wednesday morning at the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility.
Deputies and on-site medical staff responded at about 1:30 a.m. to assist the inmate, who was experiencing a medical emergency. While staff assessed him, he became unresponsive and stopped breathing. Personnel immediately began life-saving measures.
Sedgwick County EMS and the Wichita Fire Department responded. Despite continued resuscitation efforts, the inmate was pronounced dead at 2:28 a.m.
An autopsy was performed Wednesday morning at the Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center. The coroner’s provisional anatomic diagnosis indicates the cause of death was pulmonary thromboembolism.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has been notified, and detectives and agents are conducting a full investigation. The inmate’s family has been notified, and his identity is being withheld at their request.
He had been in custody since Dec. 2, 2025, on charges of burglary, criminal deprivation of property, and traffic-related offenses.
This is the first in-custody death at the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility in 2026.
