SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating the death of a child in Shawnee County have identified the victim as 9-year-old Zerick I. Ozuna, 9, of Topeka, according to Sheriff's Deputy Abigail Christian.
Shortly after 11:30 a.m. Thursday, the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call regarding an incident on SW Worwick Town Road.
First responders found the boy located inside the residence, suffering from multiple wounds to the chest and neck. The child was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Detectives were in the process of executing a search warrant at the home. The mother of the deceased child, Shyla M. Goracke, 29, of Topeka, has been placed into custody in connection with the matter. She remains at a local hospital.
Authorities have not released results of an autopsy examination that was scheduled for Friday.
