SEDGWICK COUNTY — A former Kansas detective accused of felony crimes is due in court Thursday.
Shawn McMahon, 57, Wichita, is scheduled to attend an arraignment hearing in the courtroom of Judge Kevin Smith. He could be asked how he will plead to charges of making false information and interference with law enforcement officer; Falsely reporting a felony, intending to obstruct.
In July the Judge determined there was enough evidence for McMahon to stand trial on accusations he failed to thoroughly investigate criminal complaints with the Exploited and Missing Children’s Unit in Wichita, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. He was to face a trial starting this month.
In December 2024, the Wichita Police Department was requested to investigate McMahon's conduct with the Exploited and Missing Children’s Unit. He served on a task force investigating internet crimes involving children.
Investigators from the Wichita Police Department’s Advanced Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) carried out the investigation, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.
McMahon was place on leave from Wichita Police in July 2025.
