PITTSBURG – With six total events scored, the top-ranked Cloud County Community College women's track and field team finds itself in second place after day one of the 2021 NJCAA Region VI/Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships inside the Plaster Center in Pittsburg on Saturday.
Twelve teams have officially scored at the meet, with Cloud County earning 36 points in five different events to trail only number seven-ranked Cowley who leads with a total of 46 points after day one. In third-place is third-ranked Barton who scored 29 points on opening day followed by Fort Scott (27 points), Hutchinson (18 points), and Butler (16 points) to round out the top half of the field.
With limited entries competing on the first day, the T-Birds would get a large chunk of their points from the Region Champion distance medley relay team as CCCC runners Ludjenie Mondesir, Passion Crews, Abigail Fisher, and Kya Johnson would team up to run a time of 13:02.21 to win the race by over 37 seconds and beating the previous season-best for Cloud County by over nine seconds.
CCCC would then get a pair of Region VI runner-up finishes in field events courtesy of Georgia Bell in the pole vault (2.74 meters, 8 ft. – 11.75 in.) and Marie Forbes in the weight throw (17.86 meters, 58 ft. – 7 in.) Also scoring for Cloud County in the pole vault would be Aeryn Reckward with a sixth-place finish (2.29 meters, 7 ft. – 6 in.) while Maycee Callihan took seventh in the weight throw (12.71 meters, 41 ft. – 8 in.).
Other points scored for CCCC on Saturday saw Patricia Koma take third in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:56.70 as the sophomore will look to score additional points in tomorrow's 1,000-meter run and mile run.
The rest of Cloud County's Saturday action saw the T-Birds on the track as both Keiana Newman (9.45) and Reckward (9.81) qualified for tomorrow's 60-meter hurdle finals while the Mercy Ntia-Obong (7.31) and Isila Apkup (7.50) did the same for tomorrow's 60-meter dash finals. Both Ntia-Obong (23.99) and Apkup (24.78) alongside Leonie Beu (24.92) qualified for tomorrow's 200-meter dash finals as the CCCC will look to rack up points in those three events tomorrow.
Action tomorrow is slated to get underway at 10 a.m. for the T-Birds as Cloud County will have a host of additional athletes competing. Both sprint and distance races are expected to give CCCC a big boost in the team scoring as a Region VI Champion will be crowned in the late afternoon.
