
SEDGWICK COUNTY– A woman found guilty of killing her 2-year-old son is going to prison.
On Monday, Sedgwick County Judge Eric Williams sentenced 30-year-old Stephanie Aviles to life up to 25 years, plus 34 months for abuse of a child, and 7 months for aggravated endangering a child, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.
In July, a jury convicted Aviles of first-degree murder in the death of 2-year-old Jacob Aviles.
Aviles former boyfriend, Bernardo Gonzalez-Mejia is scheduled for a jury trial on similar charges in the boy's death in December.
In September of 2019, officers responded to assist EMS on the report of a toddler not breathing at a home near Kellogg and Seneca in Wichita, according to a media release from Wichita Police. The child was pronounced dead about 30 minutes after they arrived. .
Two other children were taken into protective custody after Aviles and Gonzalez-Mejia were arrested.
