Fire Marshal: Pet cat dies in Kansas house fire

SHAWNEE COUNTY—An accidental fire did significant damage to a Kansas home on Friday

Just before 11:00 a.m.,  a fire was discovered on the front porch of the residence at 2729 SE Wisconsin Avenue in Topeka, according to Fire Marshal Tod Harrison.

Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke and fire on the front of the home. One pet cat was rescued from the interior of the home and one died due to injuries as a result of this fire, according to Harrison.

The fire was extinguished but not before significant damage was done throughout the attic spaces. All three occupants were able escape unharmed.

Preliminary investigation indicates the cause of the fire as Accidental; more likely than not associated with improper disposal of smoking materials. The estimated dollar loss – $103,500.00; of which $78,500.00 is associated with structural loss and $25,000.00 associated with contents loss. Working smoke detectors were present within the home, according to Harrison.
