Police ID man who died after shooting near KC convenience store

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement investigating a weekend Kansas City homicide have identified the victim as 45-year-old Monroe Mitchell, according to KCPD Sergeant Phil DiMartino.

Just after 7p.m. Sunday, police were dispatched to the area of 18th and Prospect on a reported shooting. When officers arrived, they located a witness who had summoned them to the area of 18th and Benton advising he heard several gun shots near that location, according to KCPD Officer Alayna Gonzalez.

Officers responded to 18th and Benton, where they located Mitchell in a grassy area near a convenience store. He was unresponsive, and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. EMS responded to the scene and declared the him deceased at that time.

Homicide detectives and crime scene personnel responded to the scene to begin gathering witness statements and collecting any evidence. Several witnesses remained in the area and assisted detectives in making progress on identifying an adult male person of interest. Police have not reported an arrest.
