Police catch SW Kan. suspect inside health food store after crash

FINNEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on multiple charges after chase and violent car crash.

Just after 10:30 Friday, police and fire crews were dispatched to the area of 700 E. Kansas Avenue in Garden City where a vehicle struck a streetlight, according to a media release.

The investigation revealed that a Kia Optima, driven by 29-year-old Cruz Velasquez of Garden City, was westbound on Kansas Avenue when he ran a red light and struck a Nissan Maxima.

Velasquez then fled the area at a high rate of speed, driving into oncoming traffic and nearly striking more vehicles in the process.

Velasquez ultimately struck a curb, which caused the Kia to go airborne and strike the stop sign at Old Manor Road and E. Kansas Avenue and the streetlight.

Officers located Velasquez inside the Nature's Way health food store at 701 E. Kansas Plaza. Through further investigation, it was determined that Velasquez was allegedly driving under the influence. Officers took him into custody and transported him to St. Catherine Hospital for evaluation.

While at the hospital, Velasquez allegedly became combative with an 0fficer before being subdued. The Officer was not injured. No other injuries were reported from the incident.

Velasquez is being held on requested charges that include DUI - 2nd Time,  Battery LEO, Felony Interference LEO, Possession of Opiate, Possession with Intent to Distribute Stimulant, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia,  No Valid Driver’s License - 3rd Time, Reckless Driving, Duty of Driver to Give Information and Duty of Driver Upon Damaging Property.
