Juvenile dies, 4 others injured in rollover crash on Kan. highway

SEWARD COUNTY—One person died in an accident just after 2:30a.m. Sunday in Seward County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Felipe Gutierrez, 17, Syracuse, was northbound on U.S. 83 four and one half miles north from the Kansas 51 negotiating a curve.

The Jeep left the roadway to the northbound shoulder and the driver overcorrected. The Jeep entered a side skid, traveling north in the southbound lanes before entering the ditch

The vehicle continued the side skid while in the ditch, tipped and rolled an unknown number of times before coming to rest upright facing southwest.

Four juveniles were passengers in the vehicle. One juvenile died from injuries in the crash.  EMS transported Gutierrez to Southwest Medical Center.  Only Gutierrez and one of the passengers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.  The juvenile who died was not wearing a seat belt. The KHP released no additional details.
