School, hospital locked down during search for Kan. theft suspect

SHERIDAN COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect in connection with an incident that forced a school and hospital into lock down.

Just before 7a.m. Wednesday Sheridan County sheriff's deputies and Hoxie Police responded to a report of theft and criminal trespass in the 1800 Block of Sheridan Avenue in Hoxie, according to a media release.

Through their investigation, officer identified a suspect as 30-year-old Olajawun Scott. Just after 7a.m. officer made contact with him at the corner of 16th and Sheridan.

After locating stolen items among the suspect's personal belongings, officer attempted to place Scott into handcuffs. He resisted and fled from officers.

Despite a thorough search, officers were unable to locate him. As a precaution, the Sheridan County Health complex and USD 412 schools were placed on lock down.

Just after 10:30a.m. officers contacted the suspect by phone and he surrendered without further incident.  Scott was booked into the Thomas County Jail while formal charges are requested with the Sheridan County Attorney for theft and interference with law enforcement.
