A saddening and difficult announcement regarding Tembo, the Zoo's beloved 56-year-old African elephant.
This morning, animal care and veterinary staff made the compassionate decision to humanely euthanize Tembo after a rapid decline in her health. This decision was made with Tembo's well-being and quality of life at the forefront of her care team's minds.
"Tembo was loved by so many; from community members to supporters further away, and of course, all of the staff at Topeka Zoo." stated Wrylie Guffey, Director of Animal Care. "She lived a good, long life - and that is a true testament to the excellent care she received from all of those that helped ensure her well- being throughout the years. She will be deeply missed."
The Topeka Zoo expresses heartfelt gratitude towards all that have loved and cared for Tembo over the almost 50 years she spent in Topeka. This is a tough loss for our community. Any sharing of memories or well wishes are heavily appreciated at this time
