Forbes leads CCCC track and field teams on 1st day of Gorilla Classic

PITTSBURG -- Freshman Marie Forbes would put up a national qualifying mark in the weight throw as the Cloud County Community College track and field teams would combine to set five national qualifying marks on day one of the Pittsburg State University Gorilla Classic in Pittsburg on Friday.

The Jamaica native would record a throw of 14.89 meters (48 ft. - 10.25 in.) as one of three national qualifying marks set by the T-Bird women's track and field team. Other national qualifying marks on the women's side would be set by Maryse Mbenoun and Pamela Milano in the 600 meters as the duo would record times of 1:26.95 and 1:27.34 in the 600 yards that would convert down to national qualifying times in the 600 meters. 

A busy day for the CCCC men saw Andres Hernandez record a national qualifying mark in the 600 meters by running a time of 1:12.90 in the 600 yards that would convert to a qualified time in the 600 meters while the distance medley relay team (Habtamu GetaStephen HollandGabriel Chinya, and Santino Kenyi) posted a time of 10:04.68. Cloud County would also get a fifth-place finish in the high jump from Elijah Wilson with a mark of 1.94 meters (6 ft. - 4.25 in.) while Marcquiece Cade and Davit Lukava would both post a time of 8.55 in the 60 meter hurdles to qualify for tomorrow's preliminary round. Richard Newman would also run a qualifying time for the preliminary round in the 60 meters tomorrow after a time of 6.95 to finish in the top 16 out of a 100-plus runner field. 

What's next?

A day chalked full of action for Cloud County will get underway at noon Saturday as part of day two of the Gorilla Classic. Both the T-Bird men and women will have athletes competing, with many of Friday's athletes competing in additional events on Saturday.
