KHP identifies Kan. man who died in I-70 wrong-way crash

RILEY COUNTY — One person died in an accident just before 11p.m. Thursday in Riley County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2011 Kia Soul driven by  Raymond E Riis, 72, Topeka, was eastbound on Interstate 70 in the westbound passing lane just west of the Wabaunsee-Riley County line.

The Kia came to the top of a hill and struck a 2020 International semi driven by Jerrod A. Burgardt, 30, Wichita, head-on.

Riis was pronounced dead a the scene and transported to Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Mortuary.  Burgardt was not injured. Riis was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

RILEY COUNTY— The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that occurred just before 11p.m. Thursday in Riley County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a vehicle was eastbound on Interstate 70 in the westbound passing lane just west of the Wabaunsee-Riley County line. 

The vehicle came to the top of a hill and struck another vehicle head-on.  The KHP has released no additional details.  Check the Post for more information as it becomes available.
