MARYSVILLE, M0. – Led by a school-record performance from sophomore Santino Kenyi in the 1,000 meters, the Cloud County Community College men's and women's track and field teams would kick off the weekend by competing on day one of the Northwest Missouri State Bearcat Open in Marysville, Mo., on Friday.
Kenyi's school-record would come in at a time of 2:26.18 which also represents the best time ran in the NJCAA this season and a national qualifying mark to win the 34-runner event.
It would be a pair of near misses on the women's side as the Cloud County 4x800 meter relay team consisting of Tanya Harcum, Kya Johnson, Shackera Samuels, and Maryse Mbenoun ran a time of 10:04.75, just missing out on a national qualifying time of 10:04.27. Sophomore Sophie Jebose would also just fall shy of a national qualifying mark in the pole vault, putting up a mark of 3.07 meters (10 ft. – 0.75 in.) which fell just 0.75 inches shy of the needed mark to qualify for the national meet (3.09 meters).
Other results on Friday for the T-Bird men saw Marcquiece Cade lead a group of five CCCC runners in the 200 meters to take third with a time of 23.23 while Andres Hernandez took fourth with a time of 23.30. Other results in the 200 meters saw Davit Lukava (23.76, Samuel Macklin (24.11, and Chanler Taylor (24.21) all put up season-best times in the event. Cloud County would also get a top-eight finish from Habtamu Geta in the 5,000 meters as the freshman took sixth with a time of 15:47.07.
