Kan. police K9 helps seize drugs, cash near elementary school

RENO COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after a drug bust.

Just after 10a.m. Monday, the Hutchinson Police Department Repeat Offender Unit, Detective Division, and K-9 Unit served a search warrant at 404 E 10th Avenue in Hutchinson, following an investigation into the residence, which is in the immediate vicinity of Faris Elementary, for distributing illegal narcotics, according to a media release.

Police found distribution quantities of cocaine/crack cocaine and marijuana along with drug paraphernalia consistent with drug sales and over $17,000 in suspected drug proceeds

Police arrested 41-year-old Derrick Stewart on requested charges that include Possession of Cocaine with Intent to Distribute within 1000' of a School, Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute within 1000' of a School, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia w/Intent to Distribute within 1000' of a school and Felony Interference with Law Enforcement.  

Stewart has previous convictions for battery, criminal discharge of a firearm and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.
