SHAWNEE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after barricading himself in a residence following a domestic incident Tuesday.

Just before 6a.m. Tuesday, the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center began receiving reports of a domestic disturbance in the 4100 block of SW Shenandoah Road, according to police spokesperson Gretchen Koenen.

The suspect identified as 41-year-old Michael Stringfield of Topeka then drove to a residence in the 6200 block of SW 26th Court.

The Topeka Police Department Response Team and Crisis Negotiators responded to the scene and began speaking with the suspect. After nearly three hours of negotiations, the suspect surrendered himself peacefully to officers. Stringfield was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges that include Domestic Battery and Interference with Law Enforcement.

He has previous convictions for burglary, criminal threat, battery, domestic battery and obstruction, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections and had been out of prison since November 2015.
