KC fire crews avoid disaster while battling New Year's Day blaze

KANSAS CITY —Kansas City fire crews avoided disaster when a roof partially collapsed at a vacant structure fire on New Year's Day.

Just after 11a.m. Wednesday, crews responded to a reported building fire in the 5100 block of E. 27th Street in Kansas City, according to Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins.

Crews reported heavy smoke and fire from a two-story vacant building as they arrived.

After several minutes of interior operations, the Incident Commander made the decision to evacuate the structure and transition to a defensive operation.

Five to ten minutes after the evacuation was completed there was a collapse of the roof on the west end of the structure. No firefighters were injured during the collapse or throughout the operation.

The fire was placed under control just before noon. . The cause of the fire is under investigation by KCFD.
