SEDGWICK COUNTY —Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate at the Sedgwick County Jail.

On Tuesday, 34-year-old Pierre Collins of Wichita was found unresponsive in his cell, according to Sherif's Lt. Benjamin Blick.

Detention staff, along with detention facility medical staff, immediately started chest compressions.

Sedgwick County Emergency Medical Services and the Wichita Fire Department arrived on scene and took over life saving measures. At approximately 10:25 P.M., Collins was declared deceased by Sedgwick County Emergency Medical Services.

In accordance with state statute, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation was contacted. In addition, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division was also contacted. 

Collins had been in the custody of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office since May 01, 2019, for; one count of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of aggravated domestic battery and two counts of domestic battery, according to Blick. Had had three previous convictions for domestic battery, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections. This is the second in-custody death of 2022 at the Sedgwick County Jail.
