Crews contain chlorine gas leak at Kan. water treatment plant

LYON COUNTY—There were no serious injuries after a chlorine gas leak in Emporia Wednesday.

Just after 4p.m., the Emporia Fire Department was dispatched to the water treatment plant, 2910 W 24th Avenue in Emporia for a reported chlorine leak, according to Batallion Chief Ryan Conley.

A  1-ton chlorine cylinder had a damaged valve that was leaking during a standard cylinder replacement procedure. The on scene water treatment plant staff were able to stop the leak quickly.

The Emporia Fire Department deployed their haz-mat team to isolate the valve and monitor the building and surrounding area for any impact to public safety. EMS treated one employee on scene and they were released, according Fire Chief Jesse Taylor.

All safety measures worked appropriately and there was no chlorine exposure outside of the containment building.  EMS treated one person on scene and they were released, according Fire Chief Jesse Taylor.

Water service was uninterrupted and there was no impact to public safety. The cause was determined to be an accidental release from a faulty valve.
