Police ID 58-year-old man who died in Kan. officer shooting

JOHNSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal Kansas officer-involved shooting have identified the man who died as 58-year-old David Russell Sweet.

Just before 6 p.m. Saturday, police were conducting a traffic stop in the 200 block of North Water Street, according to a media release.

During the course of the traffic stop, a separate and unrelated vehicle arrived on scene and the driver later identified as Sweet advanced on officers armed with a knife.

Two Officers discharged their department issued handguns striking Sweet.  He received medical attention by responding Officers as well as Johnson County Med-Act. Sweet was pronounced deceased on scene. The Officers were not injured.

Investigators from multiple agencies are leading the investigation of the incident.  The Johnson County Crime Lab  processed the scene.

As a matter of standard procedure, the involved Officers have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation by the Johnson County Officer Involved Critical Incident Investigation Team (OICIIT).
