JOHNSON COUNTY— A man is going to prison for a fatal crash that killed a Kansas teen in 2024.
On September 17, Judge Neil Foth sentenced 50-year-old Matthew Bray to 52-months in prison for aggravated battery while driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident involving great bodily harm, according to the Johnson County District Attorney's office.
Bray was also sentenced to 23-months in prison for Indecent Solicitation in a separate case. In July Bray plead guilty to the charges in the fatal crash.
In July of 2024, a vehicle driven by Bray struck and killed a pedestrian identified as Benjamin D. Van Buskirk, 17, Olathe, who ran across lanes of traffic to offer assistance to a driver involved in another accident.
Van Buskirk had been a passenger in a 2008 Honda CRV driven by Ammar M. Aljishi, 17, Spring Hill, that was stopped on the right shoulder of the highway.
Van Buskirk was pronounced dead at the scene. The Kansas Highway Patrol arrested Bray.
