Lightning strike blamed for fire at Kansas home

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Authorities say lightning is to blame for a house fire in Topeka.

Just after 1:30p.m. on Wednesday, fire crews were advised there had been a lightning strike at 2933 SW Foxcroft Court in Topeka, according to Fire Marshal Alan Stahl. Upon arrival fire crews found light smoke showing from the roofline.

Upon further investigation fire was found throughout the attic space and spreading rapidly. Crews were able to contain the fire and extinguish it.

Investigators determined the cause of the fire to be natural, associated with a lightning strike. The estimated dollar loss –$769,310 with $519,310 associated with structure loss and $250,000 associated with content loss, according to Stahl.

There were no injuries reported.
