SEDGWICK COUNTY —On Friday morning, the Sedgwick County Zoo announced the birth of a healthy African elephant calf, a male, born to mother Talia on April 10, according to a social media report from the zoo.
Both mother and baby are doing well, under the attentive watch of the Zoo’s veterinary and elephant care teams. The baby elephant's name is Bomani, which means “warrior” in Swahili.
Bomani is already showing signs of curiosity and energy, standing up within his first few minutes of life and exploring his surroundings under the watchful eye of mom and other members of the herd.
Mom and her new son will remain behind the scenes for a while to allow for the observation of bonding, nursing, and positive herd behavior. Lucky Zoo guests may be able to catch a glimpse of Bomani this weekend as he moves about his new space behind the Elephant Boma.
