DOUGLAS COUNTY—Authorities are investigating the cause of an apartment fire in Lawrene.
Just before 3a.m. Wednesday, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical units were dispatched to a fire at 1821 W. 26th Street, according Interim Chief McKenzi Ezell
Initial reports to the Douglas County Emergency Communications Center indicated that a porch was on fire and that passersby could see flames from Iowa Street.
First crews arrived on scene and observed heavy smoke and fire on the exterior of the apartment building. The flames extended from the first floor to the third floor. At approximately 3:07a.m. two additional fire units were requested to assist in providing additional response support.
Residents of six apartment units were displaced by the fire and are being assisted by the Red Cross. The remainder of the residents that were evacuated were able to return to their apartments. No injuries were reported among residents or firefighters.
