HOISINGTON – Placing four wrestlers in the top-six of their respective weight classes, the number-14 ranked Cloud County Community College wrestling team would see James Davis (133 pounds) and Zach Ferris (197 pounds) win individual titles at the 2021 Mock NJCAA West-Central District Championships inside the Hoisington Recreation Center in Hoisington on Saturday.

Facing off against seven other teams from the district with teams able to enter multiple wrestlers at each weight class, the T-Birds would finish with 18 total victories on the day. Both Davis and Ferris would go 3-0 on the day, with Davis earning two decision victories and an injury default win for his individual title while Ferris would earn a pair of falls and a decision to remain undefeated on the season.

Earning a sixth-place finish at the mock championships would Tylor Garcia at 149 pounds while Micah Sterling (184 pounds) would take fifth in his weight class. Both would bounce back from losses to open the day to come back through the consolation bracket to place in their respective weights as the two would combine for five victories and three pins.

Garcia would get a 33 second-fall in his second match of the day before a technical fall and decision would put him into the placing rounds where he would wind up taking an injury default and reach his match limit of five matches leaving him unable to compete in the fifth-place match. Sterling would bounce back from a 6-4 decision loss to Davontai Robinson of Barton to earn a win by fall to reach the placing rounds before dropping a second-match to go to the fifth-place match where he would face off against Robinson again and get a pin at the 6:26 mark of the match.

What's next?
Postseason competition will officially take place beginning on April 21  as the T-Birds will head to the NJCAA Wrestling Championships inside the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Due to the change in timeline to the schedule caused by COVID-19 and some teams opting out of competition this year, all teams who participated this season will have the option to send a wrestler at each weight class to the National Championships. Cloud County will announce at a later date their 10 members who will represent CCCC at the National Championships.
