Kansas man dies when semi carrying water tank overturns

JOHNSON COUNTY —One person died in an accident just before 7:30 a.m. Thursday in Johnson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Peterbilt semi driven by Eugene Merrell, 48, Tonganoxie, was northbound on U.S. 69 just north of 270th Street n the number two lane.

The semi traveled off the road to the right, struck the bridge rail over 207th street, crossed into the number one lane, traveled off the road to the left, entered the median and overturned in the median. Vehicle one came to rest in the Southbound lanes facing East. The semi's water tank came to rest in the median approximately 50 feet north of the vehicle.

Merrell was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Johnson County Medical Examiners Office.  EMS transported a passenger Colin Cowdin, 28, Ottawa, to Overland Park Regional Medical Center. They were both properly restrained, according to the KHP.
