MIAMI COUNTY —One person died in an accident just before 6:30a.m. Sunday in Miami County.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Ford Focus driven by Melissa Dawn Hicks, 33, Pomona, Kansas, was southbound on Interstate 35 just south of 223rd road in the left lane.
The Ford struck a 2008 Volkswagen Rabbit that had been involved in a previous collision and was disabled on Interstate 35 facing northeast across the lanes of traffic.
The driver of the Volkswagen Matthew James O'Neil, 21, Wellsville, had exited the vehicle. When the Ford struck the left front corner of the Volkswagen, the Volkswagen struck O'Neill. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
EMS transported Hicks to the hospital in Ottawa. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.
