ELLIS COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged arson fire in Hays.

Just before 8:30p.m. Thursday, fire crews responded to a report of a fire in an apartment complex at 527 E. 8th Street in Hays, according to a media release.

Fire crews found smoke and flames coming from the apartment and deployed an attack line to extinguish the fire and it was quickly brought under control. Crews stayed on scene for several hours to clear out smoke and carbon monoxide gases in neighboring apartments. Fire damage was limited to the original apartment.

Several occupants were treated on scene and one was transported to the hospital with non-life threating injuries.

The cause of the fire is determined to be incendiary.

"It was intentionally set," Shane Preston, deputy fire chief said Friday morning. "The incident is currently under investigation by the Hays Fire and Hays Police departments."
