
SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas stepfather accused in the child abuse death of a toddler made his first court appearance on Wednesday.
Shawn D. Lewis, 33, was charged with first degree murder and child abust in the death of his 2-year-old stepson, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorneys office.
On July 3, police responded to Wesley Medical Center after being notified of a two-year-old boy who was brought to the hospital with severe injuries after a reported fall, according to Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses.
During the investigation, it was determined that the injuries sustained by the child were inconsistent with the facts provided by Lewis who as caring for the child at the time the boy was injured.
Patrol officers and investigators from the Exploited Missing Children’s Unit and the WPD Homicide Unit began investigating this case due to the severity of the injuries.
On July 3, police arrested the 33-year-old step-father of the boy Shawn D. Lewis, on requested charges of Aggravated Battery, head trauma/permanent and Child Abuse.
On Saturday the child, John Landon Delano, died of his injuries. Lewis is being held on a $2 million bond and is due back in court July 21.
