Update: Pedestrian killed by racing car in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY (AP) — A suspect in the death of a woman who was struck by a vehicle in Kansas City during the weekend surrendered, police said Monday.

The suspect was wanted in the death of Zahara Kathawalla, 23, of Kansas City, WDAF-TV reported. She was struck while crossing a street in central Kansas City early Sunday. The car that hit her fled but was later found abandoned a few blocks away.

Witnesses told police two cars were racing when one of them hit Kathawalla.

The suspect's name was not released.

The investigation is continuing.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A 23-year-old woman was struck and killed by a car racing down the street early Sunday in Kansas City police said.

Police said the crash happened around 2:30 a.m. Sunday near 43rd and Main streets. Witnesses told police that two vehicles were racing southbound on Main Street, and one of the vehicles struck the victim as she crossed the street. The woman died at the scene.

The black Ford Focus that struck the woman left the scene of the crash. It was found abandoned several blocks away later Sunday morning.
