Kan. jail deputy injured attempting to break up inmate fight

WICHITA—The Sedgwick County Sheriff's office is investigating an altercation that injured a detention deputy at the Sedgwick County jail.

At approximately 11:00 a.m. Friday a fight involving two inmates broke out in a pod of the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility, according to Sheriff's Dept. spokesman Branden Stitt. The altercation included the use of an improvised weapon.

Detention deputies responded to the scene and intervened to break up the fight. During the response, a third inmate struck a deputy in the head, causing the deputy to lose consciousness for a short time. The injured deputy was transported by Sedgwick County EMS to a local hospital with serious injuries but is expected to recover.

One of the involved inmates was also taken to a local hospital for the removal of a taser probe.

Detectives are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident to ensure accountability and safety within the facility.
