SHAWNEE COUNTY—A Good Samaritan died in an accident just before 4:30p.m. Thurday in Shawnee County.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a previous collision had occurred on U.S. 75 just south of the off ramp to 57th Street in Topeka. The crash in southbound lanes of travel caused a 2021 Honda Civic driven by Amy R. Shotts, 41, Wakarusa, Kansas, to cross the grass median. The Honda rest on the left shoulder of the northbound lanes of U.S. 75.
Several cars stopped to assist and one made contact with Honda on the left shoulder.
Traffic slowed due to the crash. A 2013 Ford F350 driven by Mason W. Allen, 18, Decatur, Iowa, approached the collision scene and braked due to cars stopping to render aid. The pickup veered to the left to avoid vehicles in the travel lanes and struck the Honda on the left shoulder and a pedestrian identified as Sarah J. McLaughlin-Olson, 44, Topeka, who went to render aid to the driver of the Honda.
McLaughlin-Olson was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to the Shawnee County Coroner's Office. Shotts, Allen and three passengers were not injured. Allen and the passengers in the pickup were also not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.
