
SHAWNEE COUNTY —Firefighters rescued three pets from a fire at a Kansas home on Tuesday.
Just before 5:30p.m. crew responded to a house fire at 868 SE Rice Road, according to a media release.. Upon arrival, crews encountered a single-story home with heavy smoke and visible flames on the exterior of the residence.
Firefighters initiated both exterior and interior fire attack operations and were able to successfully extinguish the fire.
Three occupants self-evacuated from the residence prior to firefighter entry. During search operations, firefighters rescued and revived two dogs and one cat from inside the home.
The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental and related to cooking activity in the kitchen. The home had no working smoke detectors.
