KANSAS CITY —A small fire did not ruin the holiday activities on Friday at Union Station in Kansas City.
Just before 8a.m. Friday, crews responded to a reported building fire at 30 W. Pershing Road, according to Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins.
The calling party stated black smoke from the lower levels and out of the HVAC system.
Companies were able to find, isolate and extinguish a fire in an air handling unit. Companies remained on scene attempting to evacuate the smoke. Maintenance shut down the air handling system to prevent further smoke movement. The fire was in a unit on the roof of Science City.
KCFD continued working to remove smoke from Union Station. Due to the size of the structure this is an enormous undertaking, according to Hopkins. Building maintenance has removed a window on an upper floor and was using high powered fans to create positive pressure and remove the smoke. There were no injuries.
