NWS: Temperatures warming through Wednesday

Stout and gusty south winds will prevail today across the region, supporting elevated grassland fire danger.

Because of the wind, the National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a wind advisory in effect from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday for the following counties in our area.

South winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Small tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high-profile vehicle.

Heavy snow and strong winds are expected, with total snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph will cause near-blizzard conditions and drifting snow.

Travel is expected to become very difficult. Blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Snow drifts may make roads impassable. These hazardous conditions are expected to impact the Thursday morning commute as well.

Any travel tonight and Thursday morning is strongly discouraged. If you leave the safety of being indoors, you are putting your life at risk. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

Although there is still snow on the ground, meteorologists with the National Weather Service are preparing for the upcoming severe storm season.

Among their preparations are scheduling storm identification and safety presentations to help prepare storm spotters and weather enthusiasts for the upcoming storm season.

"Our staff will provide an in-depth weather presentation that will engage the audience by teaching them about the different types of storms, the individual storm features that help a person to recognize the storms' potential severity, how to report hazardous weather, and severe weather safety," the NWS team noted on the NWS-Wichita website.

The in-person presentations are scheduled throughout the area, beginning in February, and are open to the public.

For Salina, January 2023 tied for the 34th warmest January since records began in 1900 and was the warmest January since 2021.

According to Salina Regional Airport weather reporting, the average monthly temperature in January 2023 was 32.9 degrees, 2.1 degrees warmer than average. The warmest daily temperature in January 2023 was 61 degrees on Jan. 16 and the coldest was 7 degrees on Jan. 31.

The all-time record high for Salina was 78 degrees on Jan. 10, 1990, while the all-time low was -28 on Jan. 8, 1913.

Salina's recorded precipitation also was above average in January. According to information from the National Weather Service in Wichita, 1.21 inches of precipitation was recorded at the Salina Regional Airport, the official reporting station for the city. That amount was a half inch above the average for Salina.

January 2023 tied for the 23rd wettest January on record and was the wettest since 2017. Salina's wettest January came in 1949 with 3.45 inches of precipitation. The city's driest January came in 1986 when no measurable precipitation was recorded.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued wind chill advisories in effect from 2-9 a.m. Monday for the following counties in our area.

Wind chills as low as 15 below zero are expected to return overnight.

Wind chill advisories issued for Ellsworth, Lincoln counties for Monday

Well-below-normal highs are expected today with temperatures in the teens and 20s. Well-below-normal lows are expected tonight as well with lows near zero possible in central Kansas.

Bitterly cold wind chills are expected Monday morning across the regions. Be sure to wear layers when commuting in the morning. Highs will be below-freezing across the area as well.

Very cold wind chills are expected. Wind chills as low as 15 below zero are forecast.

Wind chills could lead to frostbite on exposed skin. Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves. Ensure outdoor pets and livestock are protected from the Arctic air.

The cold wind chills could result in frostbite or hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.

Isolated snow showers will be possible this morning across parts of central and south-central Kansas. Significant accumulation is not expected for those locations that see snow this morning.

Visibility a quarter mile or less in dense fog is expected. Slick roadways are also possible with the dense fog this morning.

Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility and some slick roadways are also expected this morning. If driving, slow down, use your headlights, and leave plenty of distance ahead of you.

Visibility of less than one-quarter mile in dense fog is expected. Temperatures will be below freezing through the night so freezing fog and could create some slick spots on untreated roadways, bridges, and overpasses.

The fog also will create hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility. If driving, slow down, use your headlights, and leave plenty of distance ahead of you.

Closings and delays

A compact but powerful upper level low pressure system moved out of the Southern Rockies and into the Oklahoma Panhandle and southwest Kansas during the early morning hours of Saturday. 

This storm system brought significant snowfall to west-central Kansas with snowfall amounts in the 4- to 10-inch range. At one point, Interstate 70 was closed west of  Hays due to dangerous conditions further west.
