As ocean surface temperatures shift, it could change Kansas's winter normals throughout its core months.

This week, the Wichita National Weather Service predicted that southern portions of Kansas will receive rain and possibly a few scattered thunderstorms.

NWS meteorologist Kevin Darmofal said as fall continues, the state may receive above-normal amounts of precipitation.

"It looks like there's a better-than-average chance that we may be seeing above-normal precipitation as we go through the fall and maybe the very beginning of meteorological winter (December 1)," Darmofal said.

As winter approaches, the impact of the El Niño weather pattern will begin to affect most of the United States, usually meaning below-normal precipitation and temperatures.

As El Niño shifts from La Niña, ocean surface temperatures change in the eastern tropical waters of the Pacific Ocean. El Niño is the warming of those surface waters.

Darmofal described this weather pattern as affecting the two jet streams that encompass most of the U.S., the Polar and Subtropical Jetstreams. 

This change in the jetstreams typically looks like the Subtropical and Polar Jetstreams dipping south, bringing cold, dry air to the central portion of the U.S.

Occasionally, during El Niño phases, the Subtropical Jetstream can "stick" further north, bringing wetter air to Kansas and other midwestern states.

"If it does average a little colder and a little below normal, we can still have some pretty mild days, and we could get a big snowstorm in there, too," Darmofal said.

NWS-Wichita five day weather forecast 

The National Weather Service forecasts numerous showers across Kansas this weekend, ranging from at most half an inch in Russell to trace amounts in the southeast portion of the state.

Over the weekend, the rainy weather will spread across the state and may produce a few scattered thunderstorms.&nbsp;

NWS forecasts light rain for most of the state

Rainfall totals in the state over the last three days show some reprieve from the dry, hot conditions that impacted the western portion of Kansas throughout the summer.

Although most residents welcome a break from triple-digit temperatures, according to Wichita National Weather Service meteorologist Brad Katcham, it likely will not bring the state out of drought conditions through the winter.

"When you get a drought like this, it's a slow process," Katcham said. "You don't get out of a drought just because you have a week of steady rain, showers and thunderstorms; it takes a while."

Katcham said it would likely require two to four weeks of steady rainfall to escape severe or extreme drought conditions — unlikely throughout the Kansas winter.

Katcham said the NWS suspects the winter season will begin with below-normal precipitation alongside above-normal temperatures.

"For the further, three-month outlook, (national NWS centers) are talking about seasonal normals," Katcham said. "Which doesn't bode well for helping out drought conditions."

NWS meteorologist previews Kansas's winter season

<a href="https://www.weather.gov/ict/event_20080912">On this date back in 2008</a> Wichita set its all time daily rainfall recorded when it picked-up 10.31 inches of rainfall. This caused significant flooding across Wichita, especially on the west side of town. Many locations across south central Kansas received nearly a foot of rain.&nbsp;

After a brief cool-down Wednesday, temperatures will return to the 90s area-wide Thursday afternoon. Otherwise, a few showers or storms are possible late Thursday into Friday morning.

Triple digit heat expected for holiday weekend

Heat indices of 105+ will be possible across the region today. Be sure to limit activities that may expose you to the heat.

Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Excessive heat will continue through Thursday evening with heat indices 110+ degrees. Hot conditions will continue into Friday with highs between 100 and 105 degrees possible across the area.

The heat will continue area wide on Friday and for southern Kansas again on Saturday. Highs look to be closer to normal on Sunday and Monday. There will be a few chances for storms this weekend with the best chances across central Kansas.
