SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a weekend homicide in Wichita have a suspect in custody.

A 26-year-old male has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred Saturday afternoon in the 4100 block of West Pine.

Just before 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, police responded to a report of a disturbance involving gunshot in the 4100 Block of West Pine in Wichita, according to Police spokesman Andrew Ford. Upon arrival, officers discovered that a male victim had been shot and was transported to a local hospital by private vehicle.

The victim has been identified as Sauhni Stallings, 23, of Wichita. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Following the investigation, officers arrested a 26-year-old Michael Dixon as identified in booking records. He is being held on a requested charge of second-degree murder, according to Ford.

Police: Suspect accused of starting Kansas wheat field fires

Just after noon Saturday,&nbsp;&nbsp;Russell County Communications received a 911 call about a possible drowning at Lucas Swim Beach, Wilson Lake, in Russell County, according to a media release from the sheriff's office.

WASHINGTON — The next hurdle for Republican leaders in the U.S. Senate and the “big, beautiful bill”: Democrats — and possibly a few of their own members — in a marathon voting session will make last-ditch attempts to change the tax and spending cut measure.

The vote-a-rama, as it’s known, is expected to begin sometime during the last full week of June as Congress heads toward the Fourth of July recess. It will likely begin in the afternoon and&nbsp; last overnight into the next morning. Senators will debate and vote on dozens of amendments attempting to revise the massive legislation that could have an effect on nearly every American.

Democrats, who have 47 votes in the Senate compared to 53 for Republicans, plan to zero in on Medicaid, taxes, corruption, policies that could raise energy costs and proposals that would increase the deficit, according to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., and the committee chairs tasked with drafting pieces of the package have spent weeks combing through the House-passed bill to figure out what needs to be altered to avoid divisive floor votes.&nbsp;

They’ve rewritten numerous policy proposals to comply with the strict rules that go along with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/five-questions-and-answers-about-reconciliation-us-senate" target="_blank">the complex reconciliation process</a>&nbsp;and are now trying to work out disagreements among GOP senators that could doom or complicate a final deal.

The goal is to avoid a protracted debate over core GOP provisions in full public view once the vote-a-rama begins, though some senators are already predicting votes on GOP amendments.

Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/gop-senators-warn-mega-bills-new-medicaid-cuts-will-hurt-rural-hospitals" target="_blank">who has raised concerns about the bill’s impact on rural hospitals</a>, said he hopes GOP leaders reach a consensus before vote-a-rama but didn’t rule out offering his own amendments if they don’t settle their disputes.

“Amending it on the floor, that’s a potentially messy process,” Hawley said. “I would hope that we could get to a good place before that. But we have to fix the rural hospital issue.”

Alabama Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville said he will likely propose amendments during floor debate, though he declined to say what specific policies he’d seek to change or eliminate from the package.

“Yeah, we’ll have some,” Tuberville said. “And we’ve got them all, we just haven’t turned them in yet.”

Thune said he and other negotiators are making “headway” toward consensus on the more significant provisions in the package, which in many respects is far from its final form.

“The meetings right now are on the major provisions in tax and health. We have sort of pre-litigated a lot of that,” Thune said. “But there are a lot of the other provisions in the bill, chapters in the bill that are still subject to going through the Byrd bath, and we’re in the process of doing that. But hopefully that’ll be done by early next week.”

Republicans are using the reconciliation process to pass their sweeping tax and spending cuts package through the Senate with just a simple majority vote, requiring them to comply with the Byrd rules.

That includes the Byrd bath — going before the Senate parliamentarian to explain how each provision has an impact on federal revenue or spending that is not “merely incidental.” Democrats then usually debate before the parliamentarian the various changes that don’t meet that threshold. The process is named after the late Sen. Robert Byrd, a West Virginia Democrat.

Once the parliamentarian rules what elements comply and which need to be removed, the bill can go to the floor and senators can trudge through vote-a-rama. Eventually, all 100 lawmakers will vote to approve or disapprove of the legislation.

GOP senators passing their version of the package would send it back to the House, which&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/us-house-republicans-push-through-massive-tax-and-spending-bill-slashing-medicaid" target="_blank">passed its version</a>&nbsp;on a slim 215-214 vote earlier this year — and could make yet more changes in the Senate bill.

Democrats are hoping to highlight policy divisions among Republicans during the vote-a-rama. And even if they don’t succeed in getting any of their amendments adopted, several votes could serve as fodder for campaign ads during next year’s midterm elections.

Schumer said Wednesday during a press conference it would be “difficult” for Democrats to peel off at least four GOP senators from the rest of the party in order to get an amendment adopted, but said he’s hopeful Republicans will “vote with us on some things they’ve all said they’ve agreed with.”

Democratic senators, he said, have created a task force to reach out to Republicans on major issues in the package, including&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/medicaid-cuts-rippling-through-rural-america-could-bring-hospital-closures-job-losses" target="_blank">how it would impact rural hospitals</a>.

“Many of these hospital administrators and employees are Republican,” Schumer, a New York Democrat, said. “In many of the rural hospitals, they are the largest employer in the county, and in most they’re the only supplier of health care. It infuriates the rural counties, and they tend to be Republican.”

‘It’s just a show, it’s a charade’

West Virginia Republican Sen. Shelley Moore Capito said she’s not concerned about having to vote on dozens of amendments.&nbsp;

“We’re here to vote,” Capito said. “As a creature of the House, we voted all the time on everything, so this doesn’t bother me. And, you know, just let the body work its will. If some changes are made, those will have to be dealt with. But I’m not worried about that.”

Arkansas Republican Sen. John Boozman said he expects the vote-a-rama will be “a very late night” and that he’s not planning to offer any of his own amendments.

As chairman of the Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee, Boozman expects to spend a considerable amount of time during vote-a-rama arguing against amendments seeking to change those provisions — including&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/us-senate-gop-tries-ease-pain-states-sharing-costs-snap-benefits" target="_blank">controversial cuts</a>&nbsp;in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which provides food aid for lower-income families.

Wisconsin Republican Sen. Ron Johnson said he plans to spend much of the vote-a-rama “going back and forth from my hideaway,”&nbsp;<a href="https://www.c-span.org/clip/qa/senate-hideaways/5109792" target="_blank">the ceremonial office</a>&nbsp;that every senator holds in the Capitol building.

But Johnson cast doubt on actually being able to amend the package during that process, saying changes to the various bills that Senate committees have released need to be agreed to before then.

“You’ve got to get this before it ever goes to the floor. I mean, you’re not going to change things substantially or significantly with amendments. I know people have some idealized version that happens. It doesn’t,” Johnson said. “You’ve got to get these things in the base bill. Amendments; it’s just a show, it’s a charade.”

The Senate has held two vote-a-ramas so far this year, and both demonstrated how difficult it is to change a piece of legislation.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/why-did-us-senate-pull-all-nighter-budget-look-inside-vote-rama" target="_blank">first all-nighter</a>&nbsp;in February went along with Senate debate on its budget resolution and included votes on 25 amendments, with lawmakers adopting just two — one from Alaska Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan and one from Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/us-senate-gop-wins-approval-sprawling-budget-blueprint-shipping-it-house" target="_blank">second vote-a-rama</a>&nbsp;took place in April just before the Senate voted to approve the budget resolution that ultimately cleared the way for Congress to use the budget reconciliation process to advance the “big, beautiful bill.” Senators debated 28 amendments, voting to adopt one change from Sullivan.

Oregon Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden, ranking member on the Finance Committee, said he and staff on the panel will continue to parse through details of the panel’s bill, which Republicans just released Monday.

Wyden said he plans to hold several town hall meetings in GOP areas of his state over the weekend to gauge how residents there view the policy revisions Republican senators have put forward.

“We’ve had this bill for basically 36 hours. The first time I had it, I stayed up all night, so last night I got a little sleep,” Wyden said on Wednesday. “But on the plane, I’ll be working through it. And I expect to be working through it all through the next few days, except when I’m having these town hall meetings where I’ll have a number of questions.”

Kan. governor celebrates Pride Month at annual picnic

LABETTE COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a woman death in a violent domestic assault in Labette County.

Just before 1:30 a.m. Saturday, police were dispatched to a reported disturbance in the 1100 block of Richard Avenue in Parsons after multiple 911 callers reported hearing screams followed by two gunshots, according to a media release.

Upon arrival, officers immediately began speaking with witnesses and canvassing the area. Tragically, they discovered a deceased woman with a gunshot wound. Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident was domestic in nature.

A juvenile witness, identified as the victim's son, reported that a violent domestic altercation had taken place between his mother and her boyfriend, 36-year-old Steve Antone McDonald. The juvenile told officers that McDonald struck him in the head during the argument, prompting this mother to flee the residence. As she ran down the street, McDonald followed and fired two shots, one of which fatally struck her, according to police.

Following the shooting, McDonald returned to the home, took the victim's car keys, and fled the scene in a white 2000 Cadillac Escalade.

Parsons Police immediately issued an alert for the suspect and the vehicle. A short time later, law enforcement in Wilson County spotted the suspect vehicle. Greenwood County deputies assisted in attempting a felony stop near the town of Severy. A brief pursuit ensued before the vehicle crashed. Upon approach, deputies discovered McDonald inside the vehicle with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Emergency aid was rendered on scene, but McDonald succumbed to his injury.

McDonald, originally from the Kansas City area, had recently been residing in Parsons with the victim. He had a history of domestic violence. On April 24, 2025, he was arrested on multiple charges, including Aggravated Domestic Battery, Aggravated Kidnapping, Criminal Threat, Criminal Damage to Property, and Endangering a Child. He was released on bond on May 15, 2025.

Lieutenant Sherri McGuire, who oversees the Parsons Police Department's Domestic Violence Unit, said "This is a heartbreaking tragedy for the family, the victim's child, and our entire community. Domestic violence is a silent epidemic that tears lives and families apart. Our Domestic Violence Unit was created to intervene, support survivors, and prevent these outcomes. We urge anyone experiencing abuse to reach out there is help, and you are not alone."

The juvenile told officers that McDonald struck him in the head during the argument, prompting this mother to flee the residence. As she ran down the street, McDonald followed and fired two shots, one of which fatally struck her, according to police.Following the shooting, McDonald returned to the home, took the victim's car keys, and fled the scene in a white 2000 Cadillac Escalade.Parsons Police immediately issued an alert for the suspect and the vehicle. A short time later, law enforcement in Wilson County spotted the suspect vehicle. Greenwood County deputies assisted in attempting a felony stop near the town of Severy. A brief pursuit ensued before the vehicle crashed. Upon approach, deputies discovered McDonald inside the vehicle with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Emergency aid was rendered on scene, but McDonald succumbed to his injury.McDonald, originally from the Kansas City area, had recently been residing in Parsons with the victim. He had a history of domestic violence. On April 24, 2025, he was arrested on multiple charges, including Aggravated Domestic Battery, Aggravated Kidnapping, Criminal Threat, Criminal Damage to Property, and Endangering a Child. He was released on bond on May 15, 2025.Lieutenant Sherri McGuire, who oversees the Parsons Police Department's Domestic Violence Unit, said "This is a heartbreaking tragedy for the family, the victim's child, and our entire community. The likelihood of violent extremists in the Homeland independently mobilizing to violence in response to the conflict would likely increase if Iranian leadership issued a religious ruling calling for retaliatory violence against targets in the Homeland. Multiple recent Homeland terrorist attacks have been motivated by anti-Semitic or anti-Israel sentiment, and the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict could contribute to US-based individuals plotting additional attacks.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 16-year-old Sedalia, Misouri, boy and a 19-year-old Ozark, Missouri, man were riding Sea-Doo jet skis in Clevenger Cove near Hollister. The series of photos that the White House published on its X account Saturday gives the public a rare glimpse inside the Situation Room — again stirring the intrigue that occurs any time pictures from the highly secret complex are released.

The photos from Saturday portrayed Trump with senior members of his team, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio — doubling as Trump’s national security adviser — White House chief of staff Susie Wiles and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. They are gathered around a large wooden table in the main conference room of the Situation Room,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/situation-room-renovated-white-house-west-wing-2662c91507aa4987fad6bc238b8633a4">known as the “JFK Room”</a>&nbsp;— named for the president who was in office when the Situation Room was established.

The two officials closest to Trump when he’s seated are Vance and Rubio, perhaps underscoring the depth of their influence as Trump deliberated for days whether to strike Iran.

But the president isn’t always sitting still. At points, Trump was roaming around the room, standing behind his top aide Wiles as Caine appeared to speak. A look inside the Situation Room as Trump authorizes strikes in Iran

NEOSHO COUNTY —Just before 1p.m. Sunday, officials with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks notified Neosho County Sheriff Greg Taylor of a possible sighting of the body of 12-year-old&nbsp;Kollin Showwalter of Erie, who died in an accident on Wednesday, according to the sheriff's office.

The body was located in the Neosho River, at the KGE dam located a couple of miles south of US 400 Hwy in Labette County, according to Taylor.

Upon arrival, there were already personnel from Wildlefe and Parks, Labette County Sheriff's Deputies, Labette Co. EMS, and other First Responders on scene. They were able to successfully recover the body and&nbsp; transferred it to the Neosho County Coroner. "This has been a very hard week for everyone involved."&nbsp; Sheriff Taylor expressed his gratitude to every first responder and the community who contributed to the recovery efforts.&nbsp;

On Wednesday the Neosho County 911 Center received a report from the Union Pacific Railroad that two individuals had been struck on the Railroad Bridge south of Erie near 115th Road, according to Neosho County Sheriff Greg Taylor.

First responders found 16-year-old Arthur Pollries of Walnut, Kansas, deceased, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

&nbsp;Kansas Deparatment of Wildlife and Parks responded with personnel, a drone and boat. KHP sent numerous personnel, helicopter, and search dogs in an attempt to find the body of the 12-year-old.

After reviewing the Engine Camera footage and physical evidence, the two children were on the bridge and unable to outrun the train. Unfortunately after reviewing the footage and physical evidence at the scene, the search went from hopeful rescue effort to a recovery effort.

Body of 12-year-old Kan. boy recovered after river bridge tragedy

WASHINGTON (AP) —According to U.S. officials one of the B-2 pilots involved in the attack on the nuclear facilities in Iran was a woman.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Sunday that “our boys in those bombers are on their way home right now.”

But a U.S. official tells The Associated Press that a woman was among those piloting the seven B-2 bombers that dropped the powerful bunker-buster bombs on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Officials have said each bomber had two crew members aboard. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the mission publicly.

US official: One of the B-2 pilots in attack on Iran was a woman

KANSAS CITY —Another deadly weekend in Kansas City. Detectives are busy with multiple homicide investigations.

Just before 10:30a.m. Saturday, police were dispatched to a shooting in the 4200 block of E Linwood Avenue in regard to a reported shooting, according to according to KCPD Officer Alayna Gonzalez. 

First responders found a man suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. Officers rendered aid until KCFD arrived and transported him to an area hospital. Detectives were notified by the hospital that the victim had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased later in the day.

Detectives are working to determine what lead up to the shooting and are making headway in identifying a person of interest.

Just after 10:30p.m. Saturday, police were dispatched on a call for a sound of shots in the area of Gregory and Walnut, according to Officer Gonzalez.

As officers were responding the call was updated to a shooting. When responding officers arrived on scene, they located a vehicle that had become disabled at a nearby intersection. An adult male victim was located inside the car suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and was unresponsive. EMS responded to the scene and declared the victim deceased.

Preliminary investigation indicates this incident may have occurred as a result of shots being fired from a moving vehicle resulting in the victim being struck. Police are still working to determine a person of interest and do not have anyone in custody.

Just after 2a.m. Sunday, officers working in the Vine District observed a large number of people running out of the area near 19th and Vine in Kansas City yelling that someone was armed with a firearm and firing shots, according to Officer Gonzalez.

Officers ran in the direction if gunfire and located an adult male victim suffering from apparent gunshot trauma and unresponsive. He was declared deceased at the scene by EMS. Officers on scene were later notified that one adult female and four adult male victims, were transported by private conveyance to an area hospital suffering from gunshot trauma. 

Those individuals had varying degrees of injuries and all have been listed in stable condition.

Preliminary investigation indicates a large disturbance broke out between an unknown number of individuals that escalated to gunfire resulting in multiple people being struck. One adult male has been taken into custody pending further investigation. Detectives will continue to investigate for any additional individuals that may have been involved in this incident. This is being investigated as a homicide.

Just after 6 a.m. Sunday, patrol officers were dispatched to the 3700 block of Flora on a reported shooting , according to KCPD Sergeant Phil DiMartino. Upon arrival officers observed a vehicle facing the wrong direction, parked on the curb. Inside the vehicle officers located a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers immediately began performing life saving measures and ordered EMS to the scene. Medics transported the victim to a local hospital where he died a short time later. This is currently a death investigation. Detectives are working to determine what led to shots being fired and the victim being struck.

First responders found a man suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. Officers rendered aid until KCFD arrived and transported him to an area hospital. Detectives were notified by the hospital that the victim had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased later in the day.Detectives are working to determine what lead up to the shooting and are making headway in identifying a person of interest.Just after 10:30p.m. Saturday, police were dispatched on a call for a sound of shots in the area of Gregory and Walnut, according to Officer Gonzalez.As officers were responding the call was updated to a shooting. When responding officers arrived on scene, they located a vehicle that had become disabled at a nearby intersection. An adult male victim was located inside the car suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and was unresponsive. EMS responded to the scene and declared the victim deceased.Preliminary investigation indicates this incident may have occurred as a result of shots being fired from a moving vehicle resulting in the victim being struck. Police are still working to determine a person of interest and do not have anyone in custody.Just after 2a.m. Sunday, officers working in the Vine District observed a large number of people running out of the area near 19th and Vine in Kansas City yelling that someone was armed with a firearm and firing shots, according to Officer Gonzalez.Officers ran in the direction if gunfire and located an adult male victim suffering from apparent gunshot trauma and unresponsive. He was declared deceased at the scene by EMS. Officers on scene were later notified that one adult female and four adult male victims, were transported by private conveyance to an area hospital suffering from gunshot trauma. Those individuals had varying degrees of injuries and all have been listed in stable condition.Preliminary investigation indicates a large disturbance broke out between an unknown number of individuals that escalated to gunfire resulting in multiple people being struck. One adult male has been taken into custody pending further investigation. Detectives will continue to investigate for any additional individuals that may have been involved in this incident. This is being investigated as a homicide.Just after 6 a.m. Sunday, patrol officers were dispatched to the 3700 block of Flora on a reported shooting , according to KCPD Sergeant Phil DiMartino. Upon arrival officers observed a vehicle facing the wrong direction, parked on the curb. Inside the vehicle officers located a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers immediately began performing life saving measures and ordered EMS to the scene. Medics transported the victim to a local hospital where he died a short time later. This is currently a death investigation. Detectives are working to determine what led to shots being fired and the victim being struck.

The instant divisions in the U.S. Congress reflected an already swirling debate over the president’s ability to conduct such a consequential action without authorization from the House and Senate on the use of military force. While Trump is hardly the first U.S. president to go it alone, his expansive use of presidential power raised immediate questions about what comes next, and whether he is exceeding the limits of his authority.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said that Trump “misled the country about his intentions, failed to seek congressional authorization for the use of military force and risks American entanglement in a potentially disastrous war in the Middle East.”

The quick GOP endorsements of stepped up U.S. involvement in Iran came after Trump publicly considered the strikes for days and many congressional Republicans had cautiously said they thought he would make the right decision. The party’s schism over Iran could complicate the GOP’s efforts to boost Pentagon spending as part of a $350 billion national security package in Trump’s “big, beautiful”&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-tax-breaks-bill-medicaid-80b5781377bcd0870a1dccb3c7b8dc05">tax breaks bill</a>, which is speeding toward votes next week.

“We now have very serious choices ahead to provide security for our citizens and our allies,” Wicker posted on X.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and Senate Majority Leader John Thune both were briefed ahead of the strikes on Saturday, according to people familiar with the situation and granted anonymity to discuss it. Thune said Saturday evening that “as we take action tonight to ensure a nuclear weapon remains out of reach for Iran, I stand with President Trump and pray for the American troops and personnel in harm’s way.”

Johnson said in a statement that the military operations “should serve as a clear reminder to our adversaries and allies that President Trump means what he says.”

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rick Crawford, R-Ark., said he had also been in touch with the White House and “I am grateful to the U.S. servicemembers who carried out these precise and successful strikes.”

Breaking from many of his Democratic colleagues, Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, an outspoken supporter of Israel, also praised the attacks on Iran. “As I’ve long maintained, this was the correct move by @POTUS,” he posted. “Iran is the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism and cannot have nuclear capabilities.”

Most Democrats have maintained that Congress should have a say, even as presidents in both parties have ignored the legislative branch’s constitutional authority. The Senate was scheduled to vote soon on a resolution from Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine that would require congressional approval before the U.S. declares war on Iran or takes specific military action.

Kaine said the bombings were “horrible judgment.”

“I will push for all senators to vote on whether they are for this third idiotic Middle East war,” Kaine said.

Democratic Rep. Greg Casar, the chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, also called on Congress to immediately pass a war powers resolution. He said politicians had always promised that “new wars in the Middle East would be quick and easy.”

The base, about 73 miles (117 kilometers) southeast of Kansas City, is home to the 509th Bomb Wing, the only U.S. military unit that operates the B-2 Spirit bombers.

The first group of four of the stealth aircraft did a loop around the base before approaching a runway from the north, while a final group of three arrived within 10 minutes.

The day before, the B-2s had been part of a wide-ranging plan involving deception and decoys to deliver what American military leaders believe is a knockout blow to a nuclear program that Israel views as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-nuclear-iaea-sanctions-728b811da537abe942682e13a82ff8bd">an existential threat</a>&nbsp;and has been&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-iran-netanyahu-nuclear-trump-13d04138deb51e3f6315fa4ab5973cc0">pummeling for more than a week</a>.

Newsom departs Southeastern Oklahoma State to lead enrollment-challenged PSU

TOPEKA — The Kansas Board of Regents selected the president of Southeastern Oklahoma State University to take over leadership of Pittsburg State University.

Thomas Newsom, a former Texan with more than 20 years of experience in higher education, will become the 11th president of 5,700-student public university in southeast Kansas.

“Dr. Newsom brings a wealth of experience as a university and community college president,” said Blake Benson,&nbsp;a Pittsburg resident due to become chairperson of the Board of Regents in July. “He has helped multiple institutions grow enrollment and improve, all while focusing on student affordability.”

Newsom, appointed president of Southeastern Oklahoma State in 2020, was credited with helping set an all-time enrollment record of 5,800 students in 2024 on the campus in Durant, Oklahoma.

Enrollment at Southeastern Oklahoma State has grown nearly 500 students since 2020, while PSU enrollment has declined 13% in that period.

Newsom was previously vice president of student success and dean of students at Texas A&amp;M University at Commerce, Texas. He worked five years as president of Mesalands Community College in Tucumcari, New Mexico.

He said in a statement Friday announcing the PSU appointment that he was appreciative of the faculty and staff at Southeastern Oklahoma State.

“I would also like to thank the Kansas Board of Regents for the opportunity to make this amazing professional and personal move,” Newsom said.

Newsom earned a doctorate in higher education administration at University of North Texas, a master’s degree in higher education from Texas A&amp;M-Commerce and an undergraduate degree in business at Austin College.

He was selected to replace Dan Shipp, who resigned as PSU president in May to become president of Maryville University in St. Louis.

The Board of Regents’ objective was to hire a “growth-oriented, proven leader” capable of building on PSU’s foundation of “good fiscal management, unique program delivery and exceptional relationships” with the city of Pittsburg.

He worked five years as president of Mesalands Community College in Tucumcari, New Mexico.He said in a statement Friday announcing the PSU appointment that he was appreciative of the faculty and staff at Southeastern Oklahoma State.“I would also like to thank the Kansas Board of Regents for the opportunity to make this amazing professional and personal move,” Newsom said.Newsom earned a doctorate in higher education administration at University of North Texas, a master’s degree in higher education from Texas A&amp;M-Commerce and an undergraduate degree in business at Austin College.He was selected to replace Dan Shipp, who resigned as PSU president in May to become president of Maryville University in St. Louis.The Board of Regents’ objective was to hire a “growth-oriented, proven leader” capable of building on PSU’s foundation of “good fiscal management, unique program delivery and exceptional relationships” with the city of Pittsburg.

Thet could mean a wave of attacks&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-military-middle-east-iran-israel-a4287f29c84b6eee954011ecd8a670d3">on U.S. forces in the Middle East</a>, an attempt to close a key bottleneck for global oil supplies or a dash to develop a nuclear weapon with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-nuclear-sites-explained-israel-attack-4535b4ecb4aefb2f3de9e3ad62fe363f">what remains of Iran’s disputed program</a>&nbsp;after American strikes on three key sites.

A decision to retaliate against the U.S. and its regional allies would give Iran a far larger target bank and one that is much closer than Israel, allowing it to potentially use its missiles and drones to greater effect. The U.S. and Israel have far superior capabilities, but those haven’t always proven decisive in America’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-iran-conflict-us-history-military-intervention-397eec21eadeddf578bd1c7f7ddb334a">recent history of military interventions</a>&nbsp;in the region.

Ever since Israel started the war with a suprise bombardment of Iran’s military and nuclear sites on June 13, Iranian officials&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-iran-missile-attacks-nuclear-news-tehran-trump-06-18-2025-c6c90028dc340e2716724412fcec2cf0">from the supreme leader on down</a>&nbsp;have warned the U.S. to stay out, saying it would have dire consequences for the entire region.

It should soon be clear whether those were empty threats or a grim forecast.

Here’s a look at what Iran’s next move might be.

<a href="https://apnews.com/general-news-53f9a1d3cd334031acfc33026cfaa5d7">The Strait of Hormuz</a>&nbsp;is the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf, through which some 20% of all oil traded globally passes, and at its narrowest point it is just 33 kilometers (21 miles) wide. Any disruption there could send oil prices soaring worldwide and hit American pocketbooks.

Iran boasts a fleet of fast-attack boats and thousands of naval mines that could potentially make the strait impassable, at least for a time. It could also fire missiles from its long Persian Gulf shore, as its allies, Yemen’s Houthi rebels, have done in the Red Sea.

The U.S., with its 5th Fleet stationed in nearby Bahrain, has long pledged to uphold freedom of navigation in the strait and would respond with far superior forces. But even a relatively brief firefight could paralyze shipping traffic and spook investors, causing oil prices to spike and generating international pressure for a ceasefire.

Attacking US bases and allies in the region

The U.S. has tens of thousands of troops stationed in the region, including at permanent bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, Arab Gulf countries just across the Persian Gulf from Iran — and much closer than Israel.

Those bases boast the same kinds of sophisticated air defenses as Israel, but would have much less warning time before waves of missiles or swarms of armed drones. And even Israel, which is several hundred kilometers (miles) further away, has been&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-iran-war-nuclear-gaza-news-06-20-2025-8adbedb3427a76be7dbde4a18a05f75f">unable to stop all of the incoming fire</a>.

Iran could also choose to attack key oil and gas facilities in those countries with the goal of exacting a higher price for U.S. involvement in the war. A drone attack on two major oil sites in Saudi Arabia in 2019 — claimed by the Houthis but widely blamed on Iran —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/c92741f2c8f9414a9dbccc5f7a8e2470">briefly cut the kingdom’s oil production in half</a>.

Iran’s so-called Axis of Resistance — a network of militant groups across the Middle East,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-hezbollah-iraq-militias-houthis-israel-a257b8e55a96a536710fce91fe022915">is a shadow of what it was</a>&nbsp;before the war ignited by Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel out of the Gaza Strip — but it still has some formidable capabilities.

That’s because Iran has dispersed its program across the country to several sites, including hardened, underground facilities.Iran would likely struggle to repair or reconstitute its nuclear program while Israeli and U.S. warplanes are circling overhead.
