MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State head coach&nbsp;Jerome Tang&nbsp;continued to solidify his front court for the 2024-25 season with the signing of All-Southern Conference selection&nbsp;Achor Achor&nbsp;(Melbourne, Australia/Greenforest McCalep Academy/Chipola College/Samford)&nbsp;to a Financial Aid Agreement on Monday (May 20).

A 6-foot-9, 227-pound wing, Achor arrives at K-State after spending the last 2 seasons (2022-24) at Samford in Birmingham, Ala., where he was apart of 50 wins, 2 regular-season Southern Conference championships (2023, 2024) and the school’s first NCAA Tournament appearance in 24 seasons in 2023-24. He also played 2 seasons (2020-22) at NJCAA powerhouse Chipola College in Marianna, Fla., leading the Indians to 59 wins and back-to-back Final Four appearances (2021, 2022) at the NJCAA Division I Championship in Hutchinson, Kan.

Achor will have one season of eligibility remaining due to the NCAA granting student-athletes who played during the 2020-21 athletic season an extra season of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Achor has scored nearly 1,000 career points in 105 career games at Chipola College (2020-22) and Samford (2022-24) with 50 starts in his playing career, connecting on 56.9 percent (350-of-615) shooting from the field with 487 rebounds (4.6 rpg.), 103 blocks (1.0 bpg.), 78 assists (0.7 apg.) and 72 steals (0.7 spg.) in 1,589 minutes played (15.1 mpg.). He has totaled 14 20-point games and one 30-point game in his career, along with 5 double-doubles. He scored a career-high 35 points in the Bulldogs’ 75-71 win at Western Carolina on Jan. 16, 2024, connecting on 12-of-22 field goal attempts, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range.

Achor has been part of high-level winning throughout his college career, as his teams have posted a cumulative 109-28 (.796) record, including 48-12 (.800) mark in conference play, with 5 conference championships (2 SoCon regular-season titles and 1 tournament title), 2 NJCAA Championship appearances, which included consecutive Final Four trips, 2 Florida State championships and one NCAA Tournament appearance.

Most recently, Achor helped Samford to its best 2-year span (50-17) in school history, which included back-to-back Southern Conference regular-season titles, the 2024 Southern Conference Tournament championship and the first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2000 under head coach&nbsp;Bucky McMillan. The 29 wins in 2023-24 were the most in school history and the second-most by a Division I school behind James Madison (32).

In his 2 seasons at Samford, Achor averaged 11.3 points on 58.4 percent (262-of-449) shooting, including 41.9 percent (31-of-74) from 3-point range, and 69.6 percent (158-of-227) from the free throw line to go with 4.9 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 1.3 blocks and 0.6 steals in 18.7 minutes per game. He played in 63 of a possible 67 games with 34 starts, while scoring in double figures 31 times.

Achor had his best season to date as a collegian in 2023-24, upping his scoring average by 10 points per game (6.1 to 16.1 ppg.) en route to leading the Bulldogs in 10 categories, including in both scoring and rebounding, and earning First Team All-Southern Conference honors. He had 12 games of 20 or more points, including a career-best 35 in the win at Western Carolina on Jan. 16. He also added 3 double-doubles, including a 28-point, 14-rebound effort in a semifinal win over Furman on March 10 at the Southern Conference Championship.

Achor was playing his best at the end of the season, posting 20 or more points in 4 of the last 5 games capped by his 23-point, 8-rebound performance in helping the 14-seeded Bulldogs push 4-seed Kansas to the brink in a 93-89 loss in the NCAA Tournament First Round. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Southern Conference Championship after averaging 21.7 points on 65.3 percent (23-of-35) shooting with 9 rebounding in 3 tournament games. Following his double-double over Furman in the semifinals, he had a game-high 25 points in the 76-69 win over East Tennessee State in the championship game to go with a team-high 9 rebounds, 4 blocks and 2 steals.

For the season, Achor averaged 16.1 points on 58.6 percent (191-of-326) shooting, including 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from 3-point range, and 71.2 percent (121-of-170) from the free throw line to go with 6.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.8 blocks and 0.8 steals in 22.6 minutes per game. He led the team in scoring, field goals made and attempted, free throws made and attempted, all 4 rebounding categories (average, offensive (72), defensive (130) and total (202) and blocks (59). He also ranked among the top-20 in 5 categories in the Southern Conference, including third in field goal percentage and blocks, seventh in scoring, 12th&nbsp;in rebounding and 20th&nbsp;in free throw percentage.

As a junior, Achor saw action in 30 games with 1 start helping the Bulldogs a 21-11 overall record, including a tie for the Southern Conference regular-season title at 15-3. He scored in double figures in 5 games, including a season-high 18 points at Alabama A&amp;M on Nov. 17, 2022, while earning his first double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds at South Carolina State on Dec. 17, 2023. He averaged 6.1 points on 57.7 percent (71-of-123) shooting with 3.5 rebounds, 0.6 assists, 0.8 blocks and 0.4 steals in 14.4 minutes per game.

Achor started his college career at NJCAA powerhouse Chipola College, leading the Indians to a 59-11 (.843) record to go with consecutive NJCAA Final Four appearances, FCSAA state titles and Panhandle Conference championships while playing alongside former Wildcat&nbsp;Nae’Qwan Tomlin&nbsp;under head coach&nbsp;Donnie Tyndall.

<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/fddf8aaf-5d72-4a7e-8e4f-d3f2f00727a1">On Monday, Southeast of Saline officially announced</a> that Francis Flax, long-time head coach of Brown Mackie College, would be assuming the role of head boys basketball coach at SES.

Flax is a local coaching legend here in Salina, winning two national championships as head coach with Brown Mackie, another as head coach of the Kansas Cagers, and a fourth national title as GM of the Salina Liberty.

In addition to being voted into the NJCAA basketball hall of fame in 2008, Flax has also followed the program closely as the father of Bryson Flax, who coached the team for the last six years

Over the weekend the Southeast of Saline track and field teams also posted a strong regional finish, with the boys team taking third, the girls team taking fourth, and seven individuals qualifying for state in 19 different events, including three relay teams.

910 KINA Sports Headlines — May 20

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brady Singer stuck out nine, Vinnie Pasquantino hit a three-run triple and the Kansas City Royals completed a sweep of the Oakland Athletics with an 8-1 victory Sunday.

It was the third sweep of the season for Kansas City. It took until September 20 for the Royals to record their third sweep of the season last year.

Singer (4-2) tossed six innings on one-run ball, giving up six hits with one walk and nine strikeouts. It was the fifth time this season that Singer has stuck out six or more and was one shy of his season high. He has gone at least five innings in every start this season.

“That’s what we were hoping for, the early counts and low pitch counts and making them make decisions," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. "Certainly couldn't ask more for that when it comes to efficiency. To have him set the tone like that and get the early lead that’s all we could hope for.”

Pasquantino hit a three-run pinch-hit triple to highlight a four-run sixth inning for the Royals. It was his first career triple in the Majors. Kansas City ended the day with five extra-base hits.

“The nice thing about the Majors is that we have a batting cage close, so from the third inning on, I’m getting hot for that one opportunity," Pasquantino said. “I’m not coming into the game for my speed; I know it’ll be a high-leverage situation, so I was able to do that today.”

Bobby Witt Jr. went 2 for 3 with a double, a triple and two RBIs. Maikel Garcia had a two-RBI game and extended a six-game hitting streak. Salvador Perez had a two-hit game with an RBI.

JP Sears (3-3) tossed 4 1/3 innings allowing four runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Brent Rooker hit his 11th home run of the season with a three-run shot over the left-field bullpen. He leads the team in the category.

Tyler Soderstrom put the A’s on the board with a two-out double in the fourth. Since being recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday, Soderstorm has a hit in six of nine games. Max Schuemann had a two-hit game.

Trailing 2-1 in the fifth, Oakland had a chance to take the lead with bases loaded with two outs, but Singer ended the inning on a Rooker groundout. Oakland left 10 men on base on 11 hits.

“We have to do a better job of scoring on situations to keep ourselves close late in games,” Rooker said. “We just need to take advantage when we have opportunities. We are just going to keep working. The guys stepping into the box are working hard. We are just going to keep pushing through this tough stretch.”

On a 10-game road trip, the Athletics went 1-9, including an eight-game losing streak. It was also the fourth time Oakland has been swept this season.

“I think the at-bats were better the last two days. We pitched better than we had all series,” A's manager Mark Kotsay said. “Sometimes you get into these ruts where you start hitting well but not pitching and vice versa. You just have to push through them.”

The Athletics head home after a 10-day, tri-city road trip hosting the Rockies beginning on Tuesday night. Aaron Brooks (0-1, 3.86 ERA) will start game one for Oakland. Kansas City continues a six-game homestand with a matchup against Detroit beginning Monday night. Michael Wacha (3-4, 4.71 ERA) will take the mound for the Royals.

The Royals improved to 28-19, nine games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 2015 season, when they went on to win the World Series. Kansas City also claimed its eighth series win of the season, a mark the Royals didn't reach until mid-September in 2023.

“With this pitching staff, we don't need much,” second baseman Michael Massey said. "When a hitter is on a hot streak, at what point is he just good and not on a hot streak? I feel like that's where we're starting to get as a team. It's not really a streak. We're just playing the way we're supposed to play.

Oakland lost its seventh straight game, the team's longest skid of the season.

Lugo (7-1) allowed two runs on six hits with a walk in 5 2/3 innings. The 34-year-old right-hander had his second straight double-digit strikeout game and became the eighth Royals pitcher to accomplish that feat. James McArthur picked up his 11th save.

“The starter's job is to pitch deep into the game,” he said. “When (John) Schreiber's having to go multiple innings and three relievers are used, I feel like the standard should be to pitch deeper and to take the load off (the bullpen).”

"You feel really good that he's going to keep you in it” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. ”His stuff looked really good. The home run pitch was just him not getting the ball where he wanted it.

“This was a good test for Lugo. This was the first night when it was really warm and humid, and you could see that they made him work.”

Ross Stripling (1-8) picked up his league-leading eighth loss. The 34-year-old righty allowed four runs on nine hits with no walks and two strikeouts in five-plus innings.

The Athletics had plenty of chances, pounding out 11 hits, but they only pushed across three runs.

“We just didn't get the big hit,” Oakland manager Mark Kotsay said. “They were able to capitalize with two outs. But, offensively, there were better signs.”

The Royals got to Stripling for a pair of runs in the first. Maikel Garcia and Bobby Witt Jr. opened with singles. After the runners advanced to second and third on a groundout, Salvador Perez drove in both with a single to left field.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Cole Ragans allowed two hits in seven scoreless innings, Michael Massey and Maikel Garcia homered and the Kansas City Royals beat Oakland 6-2 on Friday night to extend the Athletics losing streak to a season-high six.

Ragans (3-3) walked two and struck out seven, rebounding from a 9-3 loss at the Los Angeles Angels when he allowed seven runs and eight hits. He has three scoreless starts of at least six innings this season.

Chris Stratton and Matt Sauers finished the four-hitter, the ninth time Oakland has been held to four hits or fewer.

Oakland has been outscored 36-6 during its losing streak, which dropped the A's to 19-28.

Kansas City went ahead in the first when Salvador Perez hit a two-out, run-scoring infield single. Perez was called out by first base umpire Ryan Additon, but a video review ruled Perez beat the throw from third baseman Brett Harris.

Massey hit a two-run homer off Austin Adams and Maikel Garcia a three-run drive against Brandon Bielak in a five-run sixth.

The Southeast of Saline track and field teams qualified well at the Beliot regional with the boys team finishing third and the girls team finishing fourth.

Overall six boys, five girls, and two relay teams qualified for state in a total of 19 different events.

On the boys side, the Trojans finished with 80.75 points, just behind Lakin in second (86), and Holcomb in first (140.75).

The Lady Trojans meanwhile closed out the meet with 57 points, behind the eventual winners in Beloit (95).

Trojan track qualifies seven for state at Beloit regional

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/masters-2024-augusta-national-8f9bcddc2f3c8aa4298a83c016286918">Masters champion Scottie Scheffler</a>&nbsp;was arrested Friday morning on his way to the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/scottie-scheffler-pga-championship-dc43b1facb4b7c5e6a8c9b29159a6ae2">PGA Championship</a>, with stunning images showing him handcuffed as he was taken to jail for not following police orders during a pedestrian fatality investigation.

In a span of four hours, the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/scottie-scheffler-tiger-woods-players-championship-387cadc831f8bf7f63e00673166d6add">top-ranked golfer</a>&nbsp;in the world was arrested wearing gym shorts and a T-shirt, dressed in an orange jail shirt for his mug shot, stretched in a jail cell to stay loose and returned to Valhalla Golf Club dressed and ready for his 10:08 a.m. tee time.

Louisville Metro Police Department said Scheffler was booked on four charges, including second-degree assault of a police officer after his vehicle dragged an officer to the ground.

Scheffler said the incident was a “big misunderstanding amid a chaotic situation.”

“I feel like my head is still spinning. I can't really explain what happened this morning,” Scheffler said after remarkably posting another 5-under 66 that kept him in the mix for a second straight major championship.

He said he could not offer specifics on the arrest because it was under investigation. In a statement released before his round, he said never intended to disregard police instructions outside the entrance to the club.

“I definitely never imagined ever going to jail, and I definitely never imagined going to jail the morning before one of my tee times for sure,” Scheffler said. “I was grateful to be able to go out there and compete and yeah, it was definitely a nice round of golf.”

His attorney, Steve Romines in Louisville, also described it as a misunderstanding and told The Associated Press, “We will litigate the case as it goes.”

Louisville mayor Craig Greenberg said tournament vendor John Mills was the pedestrian killed and offered sympathies to his family. Greenberg also said the incident involving Scheffler and LMPD was “unfortunate” and that the police department was investigating.

Traffic was backed up for about a mile in both directions on the only road that leads to Valhalla in the morning darkness with light rain, with dozens of police vehicles flashing red-and-blue lights near the entrance.

Police approached the long line of cars waiting to say a pedestrian had been struck by a bus while crossing the road in a lane that was dedicated to tournament traffic.

Mills, 69, was working for a PGA Championship vendor. He was pronounced dead at the scene about 5:09 a.m.

ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington witnessed the incident and said Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world who was to start the second round at 8:48 a.m., drove past a police officer a little after 6 a.m. in his SUV with markings on the door indicating it was a PGA Championship vehicle.

The officer screamed at him to stop and then grabbed onto the car until Scheffler stopped about 10 yards later, Darlington said. The officer, identified in the arrest report as Det. Gillis, was dragged “to the ground” and suffered “pain, swelling, and abrasions to his left wrist” after the car “accelerated forward,” according to Louisville police.

Scheffler was booked at 7:28 a.m. — about 2 1/2 hours before his updated tee time after the second round was delayed because of the fatality. In addition to the assault charge, he was booked on charges of third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

“The main thing is he was proceeding exactly as he was directed in a marked vehicle with credentials," Romines said. “He didn’t do anything intentionally wrong.”

The officer was dressed in a high visibility reflective jacket when he stopped Scheffler’s car to give instructions, the arrest sheet said. Gillis was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

Darlington said police pulled Scheffler out of the car, pushed him up against the car and immediately placed him in handcuffs.

“Scheffler was then walked over to the police car, placed in the back, in handcuffs, very stunned about what was happening, looked toward me as he was in those handcuffs and said, ‘Please help me,’" Darlington said. “He very clearly did not know what was happening in the situation. It moved very quickly, very rapidly, very aggressively.”

Scheffler was released by police and returned to the course at 9:12 a.m. He made his way to the practice area around 9:30 a.m. and was welcomed by fans — one shouted “free Scottie!” and others arrived later wearing “Free Scottie” T-shirts.

Scheffler seemed like his normal, relaxed self, sharing a few laughs on the driving range.

“I was never angry. I was just in shock,” Scheffler said. “I was shaking the whole time. I was shaking for like an hour. It was definitely a new feeling for me.”

He could see from a TV in the jail that tee times were pushed back 1 hour, 20 minutes because of the traffic situation, and realized when an officer knocked on the door and said, “Let's go,” that he had a chance to play.

He made birdie on his first hole of the day after sticking his approach shot to 3 feet.

Darlington, the ESPN reporter, said police were not sure who Scheffler was at first. He said an officer asked him to leave and when he identified himself being with the media, he was told, “There's nothing you can do. He's going to jail.”

Darlington said another police officer later approached with a notepad and asked if he knew the name of the person they put in handcuffs.

Scheffler said he never told police who he was except to say, “I'm sorry, I'm just trying to get to my tee time.”

Louisville police have attracted negative national attention in recent years after the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor in 2020 and a federal investigation into its policing practices.

A Department of Justice report released last year said Louisville officers use excessive force and conduct searches based on invalid warrants. The report said Black motorists in Louisville were more likely to be searched during traffic stops, and officers used neck restraints, police dogs and Tasers against people who posed no imminent threat.

Taylor, a 26-year-old Black woman, was shot by officers in who had come to her apartment with a warrant that federal officials later said was falsified.

PGA of America, which runs the PGA Championship, offered sympathies for Mills' family and said in a statement, “As it relates to the incident involving Scottie Scheffler, we are fully cooperating as local authorities review what took place.”

Scheffler is coming off four victories in his last five tournaments, including his second Masters title. He was home in Dallas the last three weeks waiting on the birth of his first child, a son that was born May 8.

Scheffler, who has won four of his last five tournaments, is trying to become only the fifth player since 1960 to win the first two majors of the year.

Hello and happy Friday everybody, it’s Tyler Henry, back with another KINA Sports Update presented by Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine.

On Thursday the final tickets to this year’s state baseball and softball tournaments were officially punched, as the few remaining brackets wrapped things up across the state.

Down in Hays, the TMP baseball regional saw a pair of area foes go at it, as the Sacred heart Knights knocked off Ell-Saline 14-4, but fell to the hosts in TMP by a final score of 5-4.

Both of those games were broadcast with live audio and video on Salina Post and are available on-demand any time

Meanwhile, down in Sylvan Lucas the Bennington Lady Bulldogs picked up a big win over Ell-Saline, knocking off the Lady Cardinals 7-2 before themselves being befallen by TMP in a 7-3 regional final.

With that, the state fields are set and four of our area teams will be competing for state titles next week, on behalf of the whole staff here at KINA&nbsp;congrats&nbsp;and good luck to the Southeast of Saline softball team, and the Salina South, Salina Central and Abilene baseball teams. And finally the Kansas Shrine Bowl is headed back to Dodge City for the second time in 2025. The Kansas Shrine Bowl Board of Directors announced that the 52nd&nbsp;Shrine Bowl&nbsp;&nbsp;will be played on Saturday, June 21st, 2025 at Memorial Stadium in Dodge City

910 KINA Sports Headlines — May 17

The Abilene Cowboys left little doubt about their playoff prowess this week, steamrolling their way through the 4A regional bracket to punch a ticket to this year’s state tournament.

With victories of 12-2 over Winfield and 7-2 over Mulvane, Abilene will return to Salina for a second straight season to play for a 4A title.

Overall I thought the guys played well,” Abilene head coach Travis Bartley said. “We got good starts from Kyson and Stocton, our defense played well and the offense got things going early. Practice leading up to Tuesday went well and the guys were calm and confident.”

The Cowboys wasted no time getting up on their first opponent, leading Winfield 3-0 after one and 5-0 after three.

Winfield would scratch across a lone run in the fourth and sixth, but Abilene galloped away with a big sixth inning to put the semifinal match to bed early.

Kyson Becker was lights out on the bump for the Cowboys, allowing just one earned run on three hits, striking out eight, and walking just one.

At the plate, Zach Miller and Heath Hoekman ran wild on the basepaths, coming in to score 7 of Abilene’s 12 runs on the day.

Alongside Hoekman, Stocton Timbrook, Jake Bartley, and Tyler Holloway also found timely hits, with that quartet driving in 11 of the Cowboy’s 12 runs.

Game two was more of a pitcher's duel early with the two sides scoreless going into the bottom of the third.

From there, the Abilene bats warmed, and the Cowboys struck for three runs in the third, two more in the fourth, and two in the sixth to eliminate Mulvane 7-2.

This time, it was Stocton Timbrook and Jake Bartley who locked down the Mulvane lineup, combining to toss seven innings, allowing just two runs on four hits and cutting down twelve batters on strikes.

At the dish Thomas Keener, Zach Miller, and Heath Hoekman all recorded multi-hit games, with Miller and Hoekman driving in four more runs in the win.

The 4A state tournament will be played at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina from May 23 to May 24.

On Wednesday the <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/fe93e953-73b7-4b42-bbdc-fae461980529">Kansas Wesleyan baseball team</a> put themselves on the doorstep of a berth to the NAIA College World Series in a 9-2 win over the Talladega College Tornadoes in Bossier City Louisiana

The victory propels the Coyotes into the Shreveport Bracket championship where K-Dub will face the hosts in LSU-Shreveport today, with a chance to punch their ticket to the big show in Idaho later this month

Yesterday also saw the continuation of regional baseball action in our area, and an excellent day for the Salina South Cougars, who pulled off an extra-inning win over Great Bend before<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/425f2863-27dc-4be4-ab19-e3ea5c4a6f7d"> taking down Emporia 6-2 t</a>o advance to this year’s 5A state tournament.

Only one bracket remains to be played today, and that will see the Sacred Heart and Ell-Saline baseball teams battle it out at TMP at 3:00, we will be streaming both the semifinal and championship games on Salina Post with live audio and video 100% free
