ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves added veteran infielder Nicky Lopez in a trade with the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.

The major league-leading Braves sent left-hander Taylor Hearn to Kansas City for the 28-year-old Lopez, who can play shortstop, second base and third.

Hearn was designated for assignment by Texas on July 19. He was traded to Atlanta last week for cash, and he got one out in his only appearance with the Braves on Saturday.

Lopez hit .213 with 13 RBIs in 68 games with Kansas City this season. He is a .248 hitter with five homers and 119 RBIs in 520 career games — all with the Royals.

He was selected by Kansas City in the fifth round of the 2016 amateur draft and made his big league debut in 2019.

Chiefs Quotes: Head Coach Andy Reid

Dustin Sahlmann is like any other coach: He wants his Kansas Wesleyan men’s volleyball team to be successful and works tirelessly to make it happen.

“My philosophy is I want our players be competitive in three things — on the court, in the classroom and, once you leave here, in your job,” said Sahlmann who is entering his second season.

“I think the easiest impact I can have immediately is in the classroom,” he said. “Obviously, I’ve got to build a roster and I’ve got to build talent. But if I can get their heads wrapped around what we’ve got to do on a daily basis in school — because we are student-athletes, not athlete-students — that can set the tone early.”

“If we’re going to talk about being at a place with high expectations, that has to correlate off the court in the classroom,” KWU Director of Athletics Miguel Paredes said. “That’s something we strive to do here, and it’s been going on for quite some time.”

Results show that it’s been successful.

• Twenty of 25 sports teams received NAIA Scholar Team recognition.

• 63.1 percent of student-athletes (350 total) had a 3.0 GPA or better for the spring semester; 233 had a 3.5 or better.

• Fourteen teams improved their cumulative GPA from 2021-22.

Sahlmann’s team raised its cumulative GPA by a department-best 0.56 during the 2022-23 school year. Overall, athletics finished with a 3.14 cumulative GPA.

“For us as coaches, as educators, we have the opportunity, the power to influence our students to always strive to be at their best. We’ve got to make sure that we’re doing our due diligence to help them prepare for what happens,” Paredes said. “The bad thing about sports is sports will retire you before you can retire it. I tell people I don’t have coaches; I have teachers.”

The department’s academic endeavors are led by Ryan Showman, who coaches the women’s basketball team and is assistant athletic director for student experience, a position he assumed in March 2021.

“It’s a long road, because I’m asking coaches to do different things,” he said. “I’m asking them to have meetings with me, I’m asking them to meet with their players who are struggling. I asked a lot of these coaches to be able to get where we are now.”

Showman established a committee of head coaches to help monitor things during the year. It featured a department-wide study hall with time requirements and tutor services. He also met individually with each head coach every two weeks to discuss academics.

“It was a lot of work for me, it was a lot for the other coaches, especially when they’re in season,” he said. “Now they know the expectations, they have owned their academic success.”

“At the end of the day, we’re producing individuals who can have great impact in a positive way on society,” Paredes said. “I think athletics is part of a life-learning tool to help individuals learn how to deal with adversity. How to deal with it correlates to how you learn in the classroom.”

KWU’s Albert Nelson Student Success Center, led by J.D. Koons, assistant vice president for student engagement and success, plays a vital role.

“It’s another resource for our student-athletes to be able to take proctored tests, review papers, help study, help with time management — anything and everything,” Showman said.&nbsp;

“To have that extra resource — not just a professor or a coach but someone else they can go to and get help — has been incredible. It’s very much an active part of what we’re doing academically.”

“When I arrived, Coach Showman was fantastic with helping me navigate through how we were going to handle and approach things,” he said. “Having the Student Success Center and that support was huge.”

Sahlmann’s student-athletes are required to attend 10 hours of study hall each week; the number is reduced if they have a 3.0 GPA.

“It’s part of being in my program,” he said. “For me to enforce that, I’ve got to have the support of everybody else, and that’s easily done here.”

Coyote Athletics Reflects on Successes in the Classroom

In an official joint press release put out by the three teams on Wednesday, the Omaha Beef, Sioux City Bandits, and Topeka Tropics announced that they will be leaving the Champions Indoor Football League effective immediately.

The Beef and Bandits will vacate the CIF as two of its founding members, having played in the league since 2015 while the Tropics, who joined as an expansion team in 2022 will leave after just two seasons.

Ownership from all three franchises each issued brief statements, expressing that among other things, they believe this move will “grow and elevate the fan experience, brand and business.”

The statement also revealed that in addition to the three teams deserting the CIF, two new expansion teams from Colorado and Texas that had previously signed letters of intent have now elected not to join the Champions Indoor Football League.

As it stands, the CIF is still home to five remaining members, including the Salina Liberty, who remain alongside the Gillette Mustangs, Billings Outlaws, Southwest Kansas Storm, and Rapid City Marshalls.

<a>MANHATTAN, Kan.</a>&nbsp;–&nbsp;Rob Heil, a two-time K-State graduate and K-State Athletics employee since September 2017, has been promoted to Senior Associate Athletics Director for Development and will lead the Ahearn Fund staff, athletics director&nbsp;Gene Taylor&nbsp;announced today.

Heil, most recently an Associate Athletics Director for Development, is taking over for Josh McCowan, who left K-State to become the Deputy Athletics Director for Athletics Advancement at Mississippi State in June.

“We are excited to have Rob lead our Ahearn Fund staff and our department’s fundraising efforts,” Taylor said. “Rob obviously has established tremendous relationships with our donor base, and the transition to him leading our Ahearn team will be seamless. He has a great plan to continue on the fundraising success that we experienced under Josh, and I look forward his input and vision as a member of our senior staff.”

A native of Olathe, Kansas, Heil has worked 18 years in intercollegiate athletics during his time at K-State and the University of Texas. Since his arrival, he has helped grow the Ahearn Fund’s annual fundraising efforts, including a school-record $58.9 million in overall pledges and cash gifts during Fiscal Year 2022.

The Royals will begin their 22nd&nbsp;season in the Cactus League&nbsp;on Friday, Feb. 23&nbsp;as the road team vs. the Texas Rangers at Surprise Stadium. Kansas City’s schedule features 15 home games at Surprise Stadium, plus 2 games as the visiting team vs. the Rangers.

The Royals will play 31 games&nbsp;in 30 days&nbsp;next spring. They have two scheduled off days&nbsp;on Monday, March 4&nbsp;and&nbsp;Monday, March 18.&nbsp;There are three split-squad dates, on which the Royals will field a pair of teams and play 2 games,&nbsp;on Tuesday, Feb. 27,&nbsp;Friday, March 15&nbsp;and&nbsp;Thursday, March 21.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Of the 14 other teams in the Cactus League, the Royals will play all but two of them at least twice, including 4 games vs. the Rangers and 3 games vs. the Guardians, Angels, Cubs and Rockies. They’re also scheduled for 2 games vs. the White Sox, Athletics, Mariners, Diamondbacks, Giants, Reds and Brewers. The Royals will play 1 game vs. the Padres. Kansas to play Chaminade in Maui Jim Maui Invitational Opener

The defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs have arrived at the Missouri Western State University campus in St. Joseph for training camp, and officials say this could be the biggest camp yet.

Chiefs president Mark Donovan revealed Friday during a press conference at Spratt Stadium that over 80,000 tickets for training camp have already been sold, with the first practice open to the public coming up on Sunday.

"We have a number of days that are sold out," Donovan said. "Our season ticket member days are sold out already. We're pretty focused on data. There's also a no-show rate every single day. So, we factor that into how many tickets are out there. But, this will probably be the most attended camp in our history."

The current attendance record for Chiefs training camp was set in 2019, when over 62,000 fans packed into Missouri Western to watch the eventual world champions come into form.

After the Chiefs won the Super Bowl in February 2020, their training camp that summer was confined to the team's practice facility in Kansas City due to COVID-19.

So, 2023 is the first time that the Chiefs will hold training camp in St. Joseph as the defending world champions.

"It is so exciting," said Missouri Western president Elizabeth Kennedy. "This is the year to see the world champions, the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. We are just thrilled and so fortunate to have them here and we look forward to hosting so many exciting fans."

Donovan says the road to another championship starts in St. Joseph, and he compliments the Missouri Western staff on their hard work to make the three-week event run smoothly.

"This is a critical period of time for our organization and for the success of our season," he said. "Without the cooperation, partnership and commitment of the entire staff - from the athletic department to the operations team - just dealing with day-to-day challenges to make sure our camp is as efficient as it possibly can be."

Donovan also credits the entire city of St. Joseph for the way they embrace camp each and every year.

"The citizens, fans, business community have been so welcoming and supportive," he said. "It really does feel like home when we come up here. We're excited to be here, and excited to have recently extended our partnership to be (at Missouri Western) this year and another year. It's going to be a great partnership for at least another year to come after this."

The Chiefs and Missouri Western announced a training camp contract extension this past spring, guaranteeing that camp will again be in St. Joseph in 2024.

While it's unknown what happens after that, Kennedy appreciates what Chiefs camp does for the University.

"We very much appreciate the opportunity the training camp provides us," Kennedy remarked. "It helps us showcase our beautiful University and beautiful city of St. Joseph. We also appreciate the opportunity to work with such a world class organization."

The first handful of Chiefs players began reporting to St. Joseph on Tuesday, and the first full team practice is Sunday at 9:15 a.m. That'll be the first of 19 practice sessions, with the final practice coming August 17.

Fans can get their training camp tickets and reserve parking at Chiefs.com/trainingcamp. Tickets must be bought online ahead of time.

Parking is $5 per vehicle. Most training camp practices are free to attend, except for July 23, July 29 and August 5. There will be a $5 admission fee on those dates.

Kansas City is getting set to be one of 11 U.S. cities to host the 2026 World Cup. Preparations are well underway, and Arrowhead Stadium will be a focal point, with numerous matches being played there over the month-long event.

Donovan says the benefits and excitement of the World Cup go well beyond the Truman Sports Complex.

"When you look at the opportunity to host the World Cup, it'll be an economic driver that we've never seen as a region. Ever. It'll have long lasting international benefits for us as a city and a region."

As previously reported,&nbsp;<a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/c1448a24-9b46-424e-85f1-5bd733d254e1">Missouri Western has put in a bid</a>&nbsp;to be a host&nbsp; and practice site for one of the teams participating in the World Cup.&nbsp;

Kennedy says the University should know more details on that in the coming months.

"We put the bid in and my understanding is we should hear (more) by December of this year," she said. "We're excited about that. Hosting a soccer team is not quite the same extent as hosting a football team. It'll be a different configuration, but with our expertise and experience, 13 years of hosting the Chiefs, we know a thing or two about hosting professional teams."

With the Kansas City Royals openly discussing plans to build a new stadium at a different site within the next five or so years, questions have come up about the future of GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

Donovan said Friday that discussions with the Royals are ongoing, and all options are being considered, but renovating and maintaining the current stadium is the preference.

"If everything plays out the way we think it will, our preference for us is to upgrade and renovate the stadium at Arrowhead and make GEHA Field even better."

Donovan said the other options are to build a new stadium at the current site or build a new stadium at new site.

Arrowhead Stadium was completed in 1972. Kaufmann followed in 1973. The Chiefs and the Royals' lease at the Truman Sports Complex is valid through 2031.

NEW YORK (AP) — Anthony Rizzo hit his first home run since May 20 and went 4 for 4 as the New York Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 8-5 on Sunday to complete their third series sweep of the season.

Gleyber Torres’ two-run homer sparked New York’s four-run first inning against Jordan Lyles (1-12). Torres extended his hitting streak to a career-high 13 games but exited in the seventh because of left hip tightness.

Luis Severino (2-4) won for the first time in four starts since June 24.

Rizzo also hit an RBI double in the first and singled in the fifth before capping a 10-pitch at-bat with a single in the eighth against Scott Barlow. It was Rizzo’s 15th career four-hit game and first since Aug. 4, 2019.

“I loved how he finished up the day with Barlow there, a long at-bat and maybe his best swing of the day, the ball he smoked back through the middle,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "So that’s him in position, on time and his contact right. Obviously he was able to do that all day, but really happy for him.”

Rizzo raised his batting average nine points to .253 and helped the Yankees win three straight for the first time since a four-game streak May 27-30. His big game came after he snapped an 0-for-20 skid Saturday — a day after taking swings off a tee on the field in early batting practice with new hitting coach Sean Casey.

“It’s just sticking to a routine and tweaking, making little tweaks here and there,” Rizzo said. “This game is such (about) feel. You could take a thousand swings and it could go the opposite way and you can take three swings and feel like miles and miles of success. So it’s just all part of it."

Harrison Bader punctuated New York’s early burst with an RBI single and the Yankees took all three games from last-place Kansas City for their first series sweep since winning three times in Cincinnati from May 19-21.

The NFL franchise and its Major League Baseball counterpart have played at the Truman Sports Complex since the early 1970s, when Arrowhead opened just across the parking lot from Kauffman Stadium. Both have undergone massive renovations over the years, the most recent tying them to a new lease with Jackson County that expires in January 2031.

Yet the Royals have made it clear that they intend to build a new stadium, either in downtown Kansas City or neighboring Clay County, and that they are aiming for a spring vote to renew a sales tax that would help to fund the construction.

That leaves the Chiefs to decide whether they will pursue more renovations to Arrowhead Stadium or likewise build anew.

“If the Royals decide to stay in Jackson County, we’ve had discussions about how we do that together. And if they go, then that is a variable and we’ve got to be ready to either continue on that path or pivot,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said Friday.

"Our team has done a really good job at just being ready. And I feel like we’re pretty well prepared for whatever happens.”

Donovan underscored the preference of chairman Clark Hunt to remain in Arrowhead Stadium, though. It was Hunt's father, Lamar Hunt, who founded the franchise and relocated it from Dallas to Kansas City for the 1963 season.

“We've gone through the process and made some progress there,” Donovan said on report day for Chiefs veterans for training camp. “There are still three viable options on the table that we've got to do the due diligence on: renovate-upgrade, build new on-site or build new somewhere else. All three of those options are still part of our dialogue. We've learned a lot in this process. The good news is we think the building itself is actually, structurally pretty sound. Which gives us the opportunity.”

“Having said that,” Donovan added, “we've learned it's going to take a significant annual investment to keep that building sound.”

While the Royals would use their share of a renewed tax to fund their new ballpark, the Chiefs would use their share not only for upgrades to Arrowhead Stadium but also to offset the annual upkeep that is certain to rise as the building ages.

Another complication for the Chiefs is the fact that they are due to host World Cup games at Arrowhead Stadium in 2026, and that means some costly alterations to the 51-year-old building over the next three years so that it meets FIFA standards.

“That would be really fast-forwarding everything to try to tie it all together,” Donovan admitted. “The question then becomes, ‘What are we going to do for the World Cup to be compliant to host that amazing event that potentially we could keep or benefit from or not have to redo?’ Versus, ‘We’ve got to make the building requirement-proof for World Cup, and we have to do that absolutely perfect, (but) we also have to play a football season pretty quickly after that, and we want our fans to have the best possible experience.’ So, we can’t really sacrifice the football experience because we did some things for the World Cup.”

While the futures of the Royals and Chiefs are closely linked, they differ in one very glaring way: on-field success.

The Royals began the day with the second-worst record in the majors — with little reason to hope for improvement — resulting in widespread fan apathy toward a $2 billion ballpark and mixed-use village at least partially funded by the public. Meanwhile, the Chiefs are coming off their third Super Bowl appearance in four years and just hoisted another Lombardi Trophy.

“Yeah, it's a special time to be a part of the Chiefs organization, right? It's a special time to be a Chiefs fan,” Donovan said. “It's also a really special time to be a part of this community. The quintet helped the Wildcats post a 26-10 overall record and a trip to the Elite Eight in 2022-23 in addition to their accomplishments off the court.

NFL Clubs Approve Washington Commanders Sale

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Visits by new Big 12 opponents BYU and UCF, along with home-and-home matchups with Iowa State, Kansas, Oklahoma State and West Virginia, highlight Kansas State’s home-and-away opponents for the 2023-24 Big 12 men’s basketball season released Thursday afternoon (July 20).

Big 12 schools will continue to play an 18-game schedule with nine games at home and on the road as the league embarks on its new 14-team format in 2023-24.

K-State: 2023-24 Men’s Basketball Conference Opponents

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– The Big 12 Conference has announced the opponents for the upcoming 2023-24 women’s basketball season, which will be the first including the four newest members of the conference.

 </figure>LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– The Big 12 Conference has announced the opponents for the upcoming 2023-24 women’s basketball season, which will be the first including the four newest members of the conference.Coming off a 25-11 record capped off by a WNIT Championship, the Jayhawks will host nine conference games at Allen Fieldhouse. Opponents were selected based on a combination of geography, historical results, and a poll of the coaches to best balance the schedule in terms of travel and competitive balance. A full Big 12 schedule will be released later.This season, the Big 12 has added four new members to the conference: BYU, UCF, Cincinnati and Houston. This prompted a change to the home-and-home matchups of old. Previously, each team within the conference competed against each other twice, once at home and once on the road. Now, each team will play five opponents at home and on the road, four opponents at home only and four opponents exclusively on the road for a total of 18 league games.The five schools that Kansas will face off against twice are Baylor, BYU, Iowa State, Kansas State and Oklahoma. Along with these ten games, KU will play Cincinnati, Houston, Oklahoma State and West Virginia at Allen Fieldhouse. Opponents the Jayhawks will face on the road only include UCF, Texas, TCU and Texas Tech.Of the four new opponents, Kansas has previously played UCF and Houston, but will be facing BYU and Cincinnati for the first time this season. The Jayhawks are 6-0 all-time against Houston, most recently claiming an 89-69 victory on Dec. 22, 2009, in Houston, Texas, and 0-1 against UCF after dropping a 71-59 contest on Nov. 25, 2001, in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.The Jayhawks return four starters from last season, led by All-Big 12 First Team selections Taiyanna Jackson and Zakiyah Franklin, and three-time All-Big 12 honoree Holly Kersgieter.
