During Sickle Cell Awareness Month in September, the American Red Cross emphasizes the importance of a diverse blood supply to help meet the needs of those with sickle cell disease – the most common inherited blood disorder in the U.S.

Sickle cell disease impacts more than 100,000 people across the country, most of whom are of African descent.&nbsp;Regular blood transfusions are critical to managing extreme pain and life-threatening complications faced by many. Unfortunately, they may develop an immune response against blood from donors that is not closely matched to their own. However, because most individuals who are Black have unique structures on their red blood cells that are not often found in other donor populations,&nbsp;1 in 3 African American blood donors is a match for people with sickle cell disease.

Life-threatening complications&nbsp;

Sickle cell disease distorts soft, round blood cells and turns them hard and crescent-shaped, which can cause severe pain. “When cells harden, they can get caught in blood vessels, potentially leading to stroke and organ failure,” Dr. Matthew Coleman, Red Cross Regional Medical Director. “Transfusions provide healthy blood cells, unblocking blood vessels and delivering oxygen, minimizing crises patients with sickle cell may face.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

To help ensure patients have the blood products they need, the American Red Cross is working with partners in the Black community to grow the number of blood donors who are Black through the sickle cell initiative, which launched in 2021.&nbsp;In the first year of the initiative, the number of first-time African American blood donors who gave with the Red Cross increased by 60%.&nbsp;In September and October, the Red Cross launches Joined by Blood, a fall component of the initiative where the Red Cross is teaming up with community organizations, like the National Pan-Hellenic Council and others, to host blood drives and inspire donors who are Black to give blood to support patients with sickle cell disease. Blood donors needed to help those with sickle cell disease

Lindsborg Old Mill &amp; Swedish Heritage Museum

LINDSBORG - Lindsborg Old Mill &amp; Swedish Heritage Museum is inviting the community to pick out some work clothes, roll up their sleeves, and come out on Oct. 1 to spruce up the museum’s buildings and grounds.

Caroline de Filippis, community development director, said this is a perfect opportunity to show support.

“We’re celebrating our 60th anniversary as a museum this year,” de Filippis said. “It’s a wonderful milestone, but it also reminds us of how important regular maintenance is to keep this place beautiful.”

The work day will run 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., but volunteers can come and go as their availability will allow. Meet at the main museum at 120 E. Mill Street in Lindsborg to volunteer.

Necessary work planned for the day will include organization and cleaning, landscaping, and fence repair, so please wear comfortable clothes that can get dirty or torn as part of the day’s work.

The museum will be providing refreshments to volunteers, as well as lunch for full-day workers. In order to plan accordingly, the museum is asking volunteers to please register with a quick survey at <a href="http://www.oldmillmuseum.org/events">www.oldmillmuseum.org/events</a>.

The Smoky Hill Museum will host Researching Your Home and the People Who Lived There on Thursday at 5:30 pm.

Join Diana Staresinic-Deane as she highlights local resources, shares creative ways to study documents and assembles relevant narratives from maps, deeds, newspapers, and often unsought or unknown resources.

Researching a property, be it an old home, a new business, or a section of pastureland, can do more than tell us the history of a space. It can also build a human connection to the people who came before us and the times in which they lived.

This presentation is ideal for those new to seeking out family and community stories, and helpful for those stymied by a dead end. Staresinic-Deane is the executive director of Franklin County Historical Society and Old Depot Museum in Ottawa.

An officer on patrol found several areas within the park had been vandalized by spray paint over the weekend. An unknown suspect(s) spray-painted derogatory words and pictures on the walls of the concession stand, maintenance building, and various other signs in the park.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about spray-painting at Bill Burke Park

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department has announced that part of S. Muir Road will be closed beginning Monday for drainage work.

S. Muir Road between W. Hedberg Road and Falun Road will be closed beginning Monday for the construction of a drainage structure. The closure will only be during the daylight working hours of 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the department noted in information released Thursday. 

"Through traffic may use the road outside of these hours," the department noted.

Motorists are advised to allow a few extra minutes of travel time to reach their destinations. Local and emergency traffic will always have access to private property within the sections of closed road but only from the side upon which the property lies.

Message to road users from Saline County

The Road and Bridge Department understands the public’s frustration and inconvenience with closing a road. However, road closures are a necessity in order to maintain the county’s infrastructure so that Saline County can have a reliable road network. Too often we see people drive around the road closure barricades. This action is not just unlawful, it is extremely unsafe. For your own safety and the safety of the construction workers, please obey all traffic signs.

For most projects, Saline County does not provide a signed detour around the project area. Local traffic must find their own route around the project for the duration of construction. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Heartland Early Education Program has announced that it will host the Saline County Safe Sleep Community Baby Shower in early October.

Due to space limitations, the event is open to all new (as of July 1) and expecting moms residing in Saline County. Moms may bring one support person.

The baby shower is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Oct. 4 in the Heartland Early Education facility, 700 Jupiter Avenue. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the program is scheduled to begin promptly at 6 p.m. There will be no admittance after 6 p.m.

According to information from Heartland Early Education, the program will include information about safe sleep techniques, breast feeding resources, smoking cessation, refreshments, and drawings and prizes.

Additionally, a safety approved Pack-n-Play and Sleep Sack will be given to each new mom after completion of the program while supplies last.

After a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, the Sunflower Fair is back, and seniors, caregivers, and anyone who plans to celebrate more happy birthdays all are invited to participate! 

A North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging event, the Sunflower Fair is scheduled for 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 20 in Salina's Tony's Pizza Events Center, 800 The Midway. 

The registration fee before Sept. 10 is $20 and includes lunch. After that date, the registration fee is $25. Interested persons can register and pay by credit card by calling the area agency at 1-800-432-2703 or they can register and pay through PayPal by visiting&nbsp;<a href="http://www.ncfhaaa.com/sunflowerfair2022">ncfhaaa.com/sunflowerfair2022</a>.

Entertainment is scheduled to include prize drawings and toe-tapping music by the group Bob and Friends featuring Bob Delk of Marion County, who celebrated his 100th birthday in early August.

The area agency is now accepting silent auction donations. Those who donate items by Sept. 5 will be listed in the Sunflower Fair program.

The 2000 Fisher pontoon boat - model 200 Freedom DLX Fish boat -&nbsp;is green and white with a green collapsible canopy and has composite flooring. The boat was stored on a black single axle trailer which was also stolen. The boat has Oklahoma registration stickers on both sides of the bow.

Total loss and damage is estimated to be in excess of $12,000.

Free health screenings offered at Salina Public Library Thursday

Those who have had to endure the closing of part of S. Simpson Road will have to do so a while longer.

In an update issued today, the Saline County Road and Bridge Department announced that S. Simpson Road between E. Magnolia Road and E. Crawford Street will remain closed despite the fact that the roadway looks to be nearly complete.

That portion of S. Simpson Road was closed May 6 due to a federally funded project to improve the S. Simpson Road right-of-way.

According to the department, all phases of the construction are complete with the exception of the aggregate shoulder. 

"The contractor responsible for installing the aggregate shoulder is having difficulty obtaining the trucks and truck drivers to deliver the shoulder material from the rock quarry to the project. Therefore, the project which appears to be mostly complete, will remain closed to through traffic until the remaining work can be completed due to the drop off at the edge of the driving lane," the department noted.

The road closure barricades at E. Magnolia Road and E. Crawford Street close that part of S. Simpson Road to all through traffic. Emergency traffic and travelers whose destinations are located within the project area may continue to use the access from E. Crawford Street.

"We understand the public’s frustration with the road being closed and not seeing any construction activity. However, we are asking for the public’s patience as we wait for the shouldering work to be completed and open the road to traffic," the department noted.

Hot Times, Fun in the City Car Show Sunday at Immanuel Lutheran Church

While the COVID-19 pandemic dominated the headlines, an epidemic that has long remained in the shadows continued to rage on.

In 2020, fatal drug overdoses across the U.S. climbed to a record 92,000 deaths. Of these overdoses, 75 percent were due to opioid use, and 82 percent of opioid overdoses involved synthetic opioids. In Kansas, the number of drug overdose deaths rose from 403 in 2019 to 490 in 2020, which is a 22 percent increase. Kansas is one of five states to experience an increase of over 20 percent, and the increase will be even larger for 2021 with the first six months (Jan-Jun 2021) showing 343 estimated deaths.&nbsp;

With the infrastructure to battle COVID in place, the time has come to re-focus on the opioid epidemic, which has only been exacerbated by the pandemic. Thanks to an Opioid Data to Action (OD2A) grant, the Saline County Health Department has released the Opioid Dashboard.

"This website is really a culmination of the work that was happening with OD2A in conjunction with Central Kansas Foundation," explained Jason Tiller, Saline County Health Department director and health officer. "We aim to bring awareness to the often-ignored opioid epidemic, show the public what we are doing locally to combat it and empower them to join in the fight."

The opioid dashboard is a website with up-to-date statics on opioid use and abuse in Saline County, information about contributing factors, education on how to identify opioid abuse and overdose, what to do to prevent it, and what resources are available and how to access them.&nbsp;&nbsp;

OCCK Transportation has announced more dates for the Guide &amp; Go&nbsp; travel training program that teaches people how to use public transportation services in the region.

81 Connection Familiarization classes in September are now available for sign up.&nbsp; 81 Connection Familiarization teaches the basics of riding the fixed route bus service that serves north central Kansas from Belleville to Salina.&nbsp; It includes how to read the time table, find stop locations, pay fares, and general etiquette.

Classes are held virtually or in person, and will last about one hour, with the following schedule for 81 Connection Familiarization for September:

81 Connection passengers may also be interested in attending a CityGo Familiarization class if they plan to travel to Salina.&nbsp; CityGo Familiarization teaches the basics of riding CityGo in Salina, including how to read the map and time table, fare payments and general etiquette.&nbsp;

Additional classes will be announced as they are scheduled.

The Smoky Hill Museum is seeking teams to enter the Chili Cook-off contest at the Street Fair which takes place on Sept. 24.

Entries are being sought to cook up their own unique brand of chili. The first six teams to enter will compete for the People’s Choice Award and best-decorated booth. Winners will receive a combination of cash and prizes valued at $150. The deadline to enter is Aug. 31, 2022.

Entrants must prepare a minimum of five gallons of chili. Public sampling begins at noon. In order to make this less of a burden, the Museum will provide ingredients to help each team get off to a good start. Teams will receive a generous starting kit of ingredients that includes 15 lbs. of beef, and a mess of onions and tomatoes. From there, each team can add their own unique ingredients to make the chili something special.

CAPS offers both in-person, online parenting classes

The Salina Fire Department has announced that the inaugural Central Kansas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and Family Walk will take place this fall at Kansas Wesleyan University.

Event check-in and on-site registration is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Sept. 11&nbsp;at the Graves Family Sports Complex, 231 E. Cloud Street. The event is scheduled to begin with an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. The cost is $30 per person until Sept. 2. After that, the cost is $35 per person.

All proceeds will benefit the FDNY Counseling Services Unit and the programs provided by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (501c3) which have provided much needed assistance to the surviving families and co-workers of the firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on Sept. 11, 2001.

 The Central Kansas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb &amp; Family Walk is a way to honor and remember the FDNY firefighters who selflessly gave their lives so that others might live on Sept. 11, 2001. Each participant pays tribute to an FDNY firefighter by climbing or walking the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Your individual tribute not only remembers the sacrifice of an FDNY member, but it symbolically completes their heroic journey to save others.

Through firefighter and community participation we can ensure that each of the 343 firefighters is honored and that the world knows that we will never forget. We would be remiss in mentioning that since that fateful day, there have been an additional 280+ firefighters who have succumbed to 9/11 related injuries or illness.

 The 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb &amp; Family Walk are not a timed race event, but a way for firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, families, friends and the community to honor and remember. All participants will have the honor of carrying the name badge of one of the fallen 343 firefighters and will also receive a 9/11 Stair Climb / Family Walk T-shirts to commemorate the event.

Salina Fire DepartmentThe Salina Fire Department has announced that the inaugural Central Kansas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and Family Walk will take place this fall at Kansas Wesleyan University.Event check-in and on-site registration is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Sept. 11&nbsp;at the Graves Family Sports Complex, 231 E. Cloud Street. The event is scheduled to begin with an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. The cost is $30 per person until Sept. 2. After that, the cost is $35 per person.All proceeds will benefit the FDNY Counseling Services Unit and the programs provided by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (501c3) which have provided much needed assistance to the surviving families and co-workers of the firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on Sept. 11, 2001. The Central Kansas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb &amp; Family Walk is a way to honor and remember the FDNY firefighters who selflessly gave their lives so that others might live on Sept. 11, 2001. Each participant pays tribute to an FDNY firefighter by climbing or walking the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Your individual tribute not only remembers the sacrifice of an FDNY member, but it symbolically completes their heroic journey to save others.Through firefighter and community participation we can ensure that each of the 343 firefighters is honored and that the world knows that we will never forget. We would be remiss in mentioning that since that fateful day, there have been an additional 280+ firefighters who have succumbed to 9/11 related injuries or illness. The 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb &amp; Family Walk are not a timed race event, but a way for firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, families, friends and the community to honor and remember. Salina Fire: 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and Family Walk set for Sept. 11

Beginning Monday, the City of Salina Public Works Department will be adding rip rap to sections of the slope next to the Lakewood Park Bridge north of E. Iron Avenue. 

The bridge will be closed for safety during working hours 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Weather permitting, repairs are expected to be completed within one to two days.
