A 26-year-old Salina man with an active warrant was arrested on suspicion of battery of a law enforcement officer after an incident Wednesday morning at a local convenience store.
Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said Thursday that an officer driving near Casey’s, 1100 E. Iron, observed Carlos Fabela, Jr. standing on the east side of the store. Knowing that Fabela had a district court warrant for failure to appear, the officer stopped to take Fabela into custody, Forrester said.
According to Forrester, Fabela attempted to flee and a scuffle ensued, during which Fabela elbowed the officer in the torso. As Fabela was taken into custody, he was found to be in possession of personal use marijuana, Forrester said.
The officer ended up with minor scrapes and ripped uniform pants, he added.
In addition to the warrant, Fabela was arrested on suspicion of the following, Forrester said.
- Felony obstruction
- Battery of a law enforcement officer
- Possession of marijuana
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
- Criminal damage to property
