Dennis Berndt believes in being thorough. So when he considered getting into the CBD business, he didn’t jump right in, rather, he took a leisurely stroll through a myriad of information about products and companies.
Berndt is the owner of the CBD American Shaman franchise at 202 East Iron in Salina that sells a variety of products for people and pets, including hemp oil, lotion, topical cream, face cream, under-eye serum, candy, lip balm, gummies, and concentrated hemp oil capsules.
CBD is cannabidiol that is found in cannabis plants, including commercially grown hemp. While hemp and marijuana are both part of the cannabis family, they are two differen plants. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive ingredient in the cannabis plant, CBD is non-psychoactive and is considered a powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety agent.
Berndt was quick to point out, however, that CBD is not a cure. Rather, it can provide relief, but its effects vary from person to person.
In his thoroughness, Berndt said he began using CBD American Shaman products, in part because he didn’t feel right selling something he didn’t believe in. Berndt said that because of his other business — B&K Bonding, LLC — he sometimes would wake up in the middle of the night concerned about where some of his clients were and what they were doing, however that anxiety has disappeared since he has been using the CBD American Shaman products. Additionally, a relative of his has used one of the products on a skin ailment and has noticed improvement in the condition of his skin, Berndt said.
“The product works differently in every person. It just depends on how someone’s body reacts to the CBD,” he said.
Although Berndt has owned the franchise since last fall, he didn’t open the store until January. Already being in the bonding business, Berndt’s biggest concern was whether selling the various CBD products was legal, so he waited until both the state and federal governments had approved hemp as a crop and and its use in products. Hemp became a state-recognized commercial crop in July 2018 and the federal government gave its approval in December 2018, he said.
Berndt said he chose CBD American Shaman for several reasons. He liked the fact that the company was headquartered in the Kansas City area. He also liked that they were establishing storefront franchises. He explained that he is not one for network marketing or selling to friends, so the idea of having a store appealed to him. Additionally, the stores are set up to offer a spa-like atmosphere, another selling point for Berndt.
Most importantly, however, Berndt was impressed with the care that CBD American Shaman takes with its products.
According to the company’s website, “CBD American Shaman is dedicated to bringing wellness to the world through ultra-concentrated terpene rich CBD oil derived from all natural, high quality industrial hemp. It is legal in all 50 states and is 100% Organic, Gluten Free, Non GMO Hemp and has no heavy metals or insecticides, and is batch tested using Ultra Performance Convergence Chromatography.”
The website also states that CBD “is known to support and bring relief to the body and mind. This includes relieving stress, maintaining focus, pain management, and much more. We follow only the best industry standards, making our Hemp Oil the most effective and the highest quality on the market today. Our proprietary nanotechnology makes our products 9x more bioavailable than anything else on the market, making our products faster and more efficiently absorbed by the body.”
Like Berndt, the Salina store’s manager, Ethan Benson, said it is difficult for him to sell something he doesn’t believe in. He believes in CBD American Shaman.
Benson said a number of the people who come into the store are already familiar with CBD American Shaman and are happy that the company finally has a store in Salina.
For those who are unfamiliar, Benson explains CBD and the store’s products and does additional research as customers’ questions require.
Berndt praised Benson for his attention to providing information to customers.
“If a customer asks something and Ethan doesn’t know the answer, he will research it and find an answer,” Berndt said.
The CBD American Shaman store in Salina is open 10:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and on Sunday from 1-3 p.m., Berndt said.
