The Ninth Street corridor is a major gateway into the city of Salina. Recent efforts to improve this corridor include overlaying the street, removing trees, replacing sidewalks, landscaping yards, and repairing homes.
The City of Salina is interested in hearing from residents, commuters and interested persons on what should be the priority of other possible actions that can be taken to slow traffic down on North Ninth Street and make it safer for pedestrians.
Reducing traffic speeds is a concern expressed by several North Salina residents due to the residential character of the neighborhood, and the need for pedestrians to cross Ninth Street to access the bus stop, the convenience stores, and the lending libraries.
The existing four-lane street was striped as a two-lane roadway this summer in hopes of reducing traffic speeds. The City performed traffic speed studies as a four-lane street before Ninth Street was overlaid with asphalt, and performed speed studies after the roadway was overlaid and restriped as a two-lane roadway.
Speed study results Traffic speeds did not reduce as anticipated. Some drivers continue to drive North Ninth Street as if it was still a four-lane roadway. Traffic on the roadway has not “calmed” down or slowed because there has been little or no narrowing of the street. The street may appear to be even more wide open due to the tree removal. Residents are reluctant to park on the street, or are unable to park on the street due to the mailboxes located on the west side of Ninth Street. The before and after speed studies still indicate a 40 mph speed limit is still appropriate for the traffic on Ninth Street.
