After graduating from Cleo Springs High School, he attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, Oklahoma where he met LaVetra Evans. They were married on December 27, 1953 and were the first married couple to graduate from NWOSU. Ken graduated from Northwestern in 1954 with a degree in math and physical education.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 – 1956.
After his discharge from the army, he went to Oklahoma State University and received his M.S. in Education Administration in 1959. He served as a teacher, coach, and high school principal for 37 years, retiring from Abilene High School in 1993.
He was very active in the Kansas Association of Secondary School Principals and in the Kansas State High School Activities Association, serving as President of the former in 1973 and the latter in 1977-8. He was elected to the Kansas Teachers’ Hall of Fame in 2007.
He was a devoted husband and a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was a loyal friend to many.
Ken loved KU sports and enjoyed many years of watching KU basketball with friends and family. He was an avid golfer and he and LaVetra traveled extensively in their retirement years.
Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife LaVetra, sons Randy (Sherry) Brown of Marysville, Kansas and Gary (Pam) Brown of Fort Scott, Kansas, grandchildren Sarah (Brent) Blair Graham, Laura Brewster, Jessica (Justin) Powell, Michael (Natthamon) Brown, Christopher Brown, Nicole (Luke) Shaw, Kacie Brown (fiancé Nik),great grandchildren, Anna, Kenneth, James, Campbell, LaVetra, and sisters Karol Jack, and Marilyn Sackett.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Celebration of life service will be Saturday, December 22, 10:30 am, at the First UnitedMethodist Church, Abilene. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations to Hospice of Dickinson County or First United Methodist Church, Abilene. They may be left at the church the day of the service or left at or sent in care of the Danner Funeral Home POB 758 Abilene, Kansas 67410.
