The Swedes volleyball team suffered a tough 3-0 loss in the first game of the First Bank Kansas Smoky Hill Showdown at Kansas Wesleyan Wednesday night.
The Coyotes took set one 25-14, before winning the next two, 27-25, and 25-14.
All three sets were decided by late-set rallies by the Coyotes. In game one, KWU put the game away with a 14-3 run. The Swedes then went up 23-20 in game two before the Coyotes had another late-set run to win the game 27-25. Finally, KWU was able to use that momentum to finish off the match with their 25-14 win in the third set.
The Bethany offense was led by Madie Baker, junior hitter, and Jordan Valentine, freshman middle, who had nine and seven kills respectively. A pair of Swedes came in behind them with five each; Nakjeya Massenburg, freshman hitter, and Ivona Vojvodic, junior setter. Vojvodic also had two service aces and 13 assists to aid the Bethany offense. Sharing in the setting duties was Madelaine Melsness, junior setter, who notched 13 assists on the night.
Haley Reifsteck, sophomore libero, led the team with 17 digs, followed by Vojvodic with 11.
The Swedes return home for a non-conference matchup with McPherson College. This match is set for Friday at 7 p.m.
