Sheriff Glen Kochanowski says overcrowding and safety concerns for corrections staff is a need to reduce the overcrowding at the Saline County Jail which has a capacity of 192 inmates.
Sheriff Kochanowski says in 2011 there have been only 4 days which the inmate population was below the maximum capacity. In 2011 the average inmate population has been between 202 and 224.
The contract pays Geary County $40 a day to house inmates.
Kochanowski says he is also looking at housing inmates in Washington, Mitchell and Republic Counties and also in El Dorado.
Washington and Republic County have offered to house inmates at $30 a day, and Washington County asking to house a minimum of 10 Saline County inmates a day.
Travel cost has not been figured into the cost of housing inmates in other counties.
