A fundraiser has been made after a one-year boy suffered a severe brain injury from a <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/1087abe6-56a6-46cc-a3bf-227f096f393a">car accident</a> that occurred on Sunday, May 25th in Salina.

A gofundme fundraiser was started by Minerva Romero, who is the sister of the mother who's one-year old boy suffered the injury on Sunday.

My sister and her son were involved in a tragic accident this past Sunday. Her baby boy, Adrian, suffered a serious brain injury and had to be transferred to a hospital in Kansas City for urgent care.

While we’re incredibly grateful that he is now in stable condition, Adrian has a long and difficult journey ahead. The emotional and financial toll on our family is immense.

We are humbly asking for your support. Your donation—no matter the amount—will go directly toward any medical expenses, travel costs, and helping my sister stay by her son’s side during this critical time.

The Salina League of Women Voters held its 2024 General Election Forum on Oct. 20 at 1:30 in the Watson Room at the Stiefel Theatre in Salina.

"We believe in the importance of mental health. We want to ensure our residents have access to the resources they need to stay healthy and thriving," said Saline County Health Officer Jason Tiller. "In my own personal experience with Cope Notes, I have found that the right messages seem to come at exactly the right time. It was been an uplifting experience for me, and I am thrilled we get to continue this service to our residents."

In 2022, Saline County initially offered the service for free to 300 residents. Because of the overwhelming response and in an effort to provide the service to more Saline County residents, the program is being offered at a 50 percent discount, according to information from the county.

Saline County continues to offer Cope Notes at 50-percent discount

Not seeing precipitation totals from your area after a rain or snow event? Consider becoming a CoCoRaHS volunteer.

"CoCoRaHS is an acronym for the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network. CoCoRaHS is a unique, non-profit, community-based network of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds working together to measure and map precipitation (rain, hail and snow). By using low-cost measurement tools, stressing training and education, and utilizing an interactive website, our aim is to provide the highest quality data for natural resource, education and research applications," the organization noted on its website.

After rain, hail, or snow storms, CoCoRaHS volunteers take precipitation measurements. Those totals are then recorded on the CoCoRaHS&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cocorahs.org/ViewData/StateDailyPrecipReports.aspx?state=KS">website</a>&nbsp;(Kansas reporting).

The precipitation totals are used by various organizations and individuals, including the National Weather Service, other meteorologists, hydrologists, emergency managers, insurance adjusters, farmers and ranchers, and, of course, Salina Post.

Precipitation reporting organization seeks local, area volunteers

What’s worse than a bogus charity? A bogus charity with a dishonest fundraiser. The FTC has sued and stopped dishonest charity fundraisers that&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2020/09/spot-and-stop-dishonest-charity-fundraisers">called people</a>&nbsp;to get them to donate to fake charities. Some prey on your kindness and desire to help people impacted by weather emergencies or a disaster. But when you get a call from a charity fundraiser, how do you know the caller is telling you the truth?

Ask the caller specific questions.

What is the charity’s name, phone number, or address? Write these down so you can confirm them later. Keep in mind that many charity names sound alike, and that sham charities often use names that are sound and look like names of legitimate charities.

How much of your donation will go directly to the programs you want to support?

Will your donation be tax-deductible? Not every call seeking a donation is from a charity. Some calls might be from Political Action Committees or other groups where donations are not deductible. See more questions to ask here.

Resist the pressure to donate on the spot.

After you’ve listened to the caller, hang up the phone and think about what they said. Then, go online and do your own research:

Search for the organization’s name and phone number, plus the word “scam” or “complaint.” What you find might help you decide if you want to make that donation.

Look up the organization’s name and address. Does it show up? If it doesn’t, that could be a sign the caller was lying to you.

FTC: How to spot and stop dishonest charity fundraisers

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The start of a new school year is an expensive time for families. If you are struggling to pay for phone and internet services, there are programs to help you stay connected.

During Digital Connectivity and Lifeline Awareness Week, the Kansas Corporation Commission joins utility regulators nationwide in encouraging those in need of assistance to apply for Lifeline and the Affordable Connectivity Program.&nbsp; Both programs help low-income individuals and families stay connected so they can access health care, attend classes, find employment, and call for help in an emergency.

Lifeline provides federal and state discounts up to $17.02 per month on phone service (wireless or residential) and broadband. Seven million Americans currently benefit from the program, including approximately 30,000 Kansans.

The Federal Communication Commission’s Affordable Connectivity Plan&nbsp; provides a monthly internet service discount of up to $30 and a one-time device discount of up to $100 for a laptop, desktop computer or tablet. According to FCC data, more than 20 million U.S. households are currently enrolled, including approximately 120,000 in Kansas.

Eligibility&nbsp;is based on income&nbsp;(at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines for Lifeline and at or below 200% for Affordable Connectivity Plan)&nbsp;or participation in certain assistance programs&nbsp;such as:

•&nbsp;&nbsp;Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) •&nbsp; Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) •&nbsp; Federal Public Housing Assistance (FHPA) •&nbsp; Veterans Pensions &amp; Survivors Pension Benefit •&nbsp; Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance •&nbsp; Tribally Administered Temporary Assistance for Needy Families •&nbsp; Head Start Tribal Programs (income based) •&nbsp; Food Distribution Program on Tribal Lands&nbsp;&nbsp;

Anyone who qualifies for Lifeline is automatically eligible to participate in Affordable Connectivity Plan. Others may still qualify for the plan if they meet any of the following criteria:

• Are approved to receive benefits under the free and reduced-price school lunch program or the school breakfast program, including the&nbsp;USDA Community Eligibility Provision.&nbsp; • Received a Federal Pell Grant during the current award year.&nbsp; • Meet the eligibility criteria for a participating broadband provider’s existing low-income program.&nbsp;

Due to higher income maximums, Affordable Connectivity Plan  also has the potential to help families that may not qualify for other types of assistance. The maximum income for a family of four to qualify for the&nbsp; program is&nbsp;$60,000 per year compared to $40,500 for Lifeline. Both Lifeline and Affordable Connectivity Plan offer additional discounts for subscribers living on tribal lands.

Plans available to help Kansans unable to pay for phone, internet services stay connected

Interim City Manager Jacob Wood has appointed Ron Marsh as the new Director of Public Works for the City of Salina. The search generated 24 candidates from across the country.

Mr. Marsh brings 34 years of management experience to the City of Salina. He served as the administrative manager for Sedgwick County Public Works for over 18 years before moving into city administration in the Kansas communities of Clearwater and Abilene. 

He served as city administrator for the City of Clearwater for over 3 years and most recently as city manager for the City of Abilene since 2021. Along with his public management experience, Mr. Marsh served in the United States Army for over 5 years including roles in leadership and training.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Management from the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, and is a graduate of the Kansas University Public Management Center Certified Public Manager Program.

"Ron’s extensive public works and project management experience will provide a seamless transition for our Public Works Department," said Interim City Manager Jacob Wood. "He understands both operations and administration, and we are excited for him to apply his strategic leadership in our organization.”

Mr. Marsh succeeds Jim Teutsch, who retired in March after serving the City of Salina for over 17 years. 

Mr. Marsh will join the management team in late June.

City of Salina appoints new director for public works

The Juneteenth Committee of Salina is proud to announce the upcoming 18th annual Salina Juneteenth Celebration, taking place next month.

On Thursday, June 19th - Saturday, June 21st, events filled with honoring and celebrating Black history, culture and community will occur around parts of Salina.

Thursday kicks off the celebration at the Salina Art Center Cinema on 150 S. Sante Fe. A special screening of "Juneteenth: Faith &amp; Freedom" will show at 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm, with a panel discussion to follow the 6:00 pm showing. The discussion will be moderated by Pastor Robert M. Cunningham of Lift Church of God in Christ. Both screenings are free and open to public.

Friday continues the celebration in Oakdale Park, with a night full of live soul music from Rudy Love &amp; The Encore, alongside special guests Cash Hollistah and DJ Detroit. This live music event "R&amp;B in the Park," will occur at 6:00 pm. Food trucks will be on site and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and coolers (no glass bottles allowed). This event is free and open to the public.

Ending the celebration on Sunday will be a Juneteenth Parade, which kicks off at 10:00 am at the corner of 9th St. and Iron Ave. The parade is followed by the annual Juneteenth Celebration in Oakdale Park, starting at 11:00 am. Festivities&nbsp;include live performances from Kim Paige and special guest Zafaja, with a keynote address from Brenda McDaniel (2025 inductee into the Kansas Teacher Hall of Fame). Food trucks, vendors and kid's games will be on site along with prize giveaways.

Salina Juneteenth Committee set to host 18th annual Juneteenth celebration 

HAYS — The Wild West Festival committee announced the return of a carnival to the annual festivities with Garry Moore Amusement Carnival, enhancing the event with family-friendly entertainment and activities.

Scheduled to run alongside the festival concerts, the carnival will operate from July 3 to July 5, bringing a nostalgic and fun-filled atmosphere back to the festival grounds.

Advance daily passes offering unlimited carnival rides will be available for $25 each, providing festival-goers savings compared to the on-site, day-of price of $30.

These advance tickets can be purchased directly at the Wild West Festival grounds from June 28 through July 2, between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm.

Tickets will also be available during festival hours on July 2. Additional advanced sales locations throughout Hays will be announced in the coming days.

"We're excited to reintroduce the carnival as part of the Wild West Festival experience," said Julie Edgeman, president of the Wild West Festival committee. "Even though this year’s carnival will be somewhat smaller in scale than in past years, we're thrilled to provide an engaging, fun option for children and families while the main stage concerts are underway. Bringing back the carnival represents our dedicated effort to expand the enjoyment and inclusivity of this beloved community event."

The festival's iconic fireworks show returns as a highlight of Independence Day celebrations, illuminating the night sky starting at 10:00 pm on July 4.

The Wild West Fest 5K will return on July 5, with the same course from previous years, beginning at 8 a.m. near the Hays Aquatic Park. Proceeds from the 5K will help support the Hays Striders youth track club.

Additionally, festival-goers can look forward to the traditional Wild West Festival Parade, which will march through downtown Hays beginning at 10 a.m. on July 5.

Extending the excitement beyond festival dates, the Hays Soccer Club will host the Wild West Cup 3-on-3 soccer tournament on July 12.

This annual sports event offers competitive play for all ages and serves as a perfect complement to the community-focused festival.

Wild West Festival in Hays enhances experience with the return of a Carnival 

Red Fern Booksellers continues their "First Friday Live Music Series" with featured musicians and members from the Salina Symphony performing a musical display.

On Friday, June 6th from 5:00 pm -7:00 pm, Red Fern Booksellers (106 S. Sante Fe) will host violinist, Denise Blehm, pianist, Judy Weber and members of the Salina Symphony.

Salina native, Denise Blehm has performed as a member of the Salina Symphony for over 25 years, serving the last 20 seasons as the orchestra’s concertmaster. Growing up, she participated in the Salina Youth Symphony as well as the Salina Symphony under the orchestra’s first music director, Eric Stein. Denise attended Wichita State University and spent 13 years as a member of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra.

Judy Weber, a Salina resident since 1965, received her bachelor’s degree in music education from the former Marymount College and her master’s degree from Kansas State University. She taught at Salina South Middle, Kanopolis Middle School, St. Mary’s Elementary and Ell-Saline Elementary before retiring in 2005.

The City of Salina is proud to announce the completion of a new solar array at the Kenwood Cove Aquatic Park, marking a significant step in its commitment to strategically reinvesting back into the community. 

The solar panels, alongside other energy conservation measures (ECMs), are expected to generate over 118,000 kWh, which translates to $53,000 in annual savings the city can use to fund key community priorities, including upgraded infrastructure, environmental stewardship and enhanced public services.

The project at Kenwood Cove is part of a larger city-wide initiative in partnership with Schneider Electric, a global leader in sustainability and energy solutions, to address deferred maintenance and develop a strategic long-term plan. 

Other efforts include updates to facilities such as Tony's Pizza Events Center, Smoky Hill Museum and Theatre Salina, underscoring the city’s emphasis on energy-efficient development and cultural enrichment.

“This partnership allowed the city to improve the longevity and reliability of our city infrastructure, while holding true to our dedication to fiscal responsibility and community wellbeing,” says Jacob Wood, Interim City Manager for the City of Salina.

Schneider Electric has been pivotal in assisting Salina’s renewable energy ambitions, applying its extensive experience in energy-saving technologies and strategic funding nationwide.

City of Salina reinvests into community after new addition at Kenwood Cove

The American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT) has announced a 4-day long weekend event that will pay tribute to fallen U.S. Veterans.

Starting Thursday, June 5th - Sunday June 9th at the Kansas&nbsp;National Guard Armory in Concordia, KS (2115 Blosser Dr.), AVTT invites the public to join a weekend in visiting a tribute wall, participate in auctions, witness live demonstrations and listen to guest speakers and live music.

Before the event begins, the American Legion Riders, Patriots Riders and Sons of the Legion will escort a U.S. Veteran Tribute Wall from Salina to Concordia on the morning of June 5th. Once it arrives, it will be ready for public display at 4:00 pm that same day.

"With all the flags whipping in the wind, I just can't imagine what a beautiful sight that will be," said AVTT Senior Coordinator, Rita Goodwin.

Once the tribute wall is established, it will be open every morning at 7:00 am.

The Kansas Highway Patrol will speak during the event on Thursday. A K-9 demonstration will be on Friday, along with military band performances and patriotic music.

"The speakers will remind and encourage us that freedom is not free," said Goodwin.

Goodwin thanked all the sponsors, First Responders and people from all over the North Central Kansas region who supported in making this event happen.

"It's amazing to see the support and stories that we have heard from our Veterans," stated Goodwin.

Attendees will be assisted when trying to find names on the tribute wall. Transportation services from OCCK will also be provided throughout the weekend.

AVTT hosts 4-day long weekend event that pays tribute to fallen U.S. Veterans

OCCK is offering an opportunity for students to apply for a scholarship that&nbsp;supports students with disabilities in North Central Kansas who are planning to continue their education after high school.

The "More Than You Think Scholarship,"&nbsp; is now available for students with disabilities to apply. The application deadline is set for Friday, June 13th. All applications must be postmarked or received by the deadline.

Eligible applicants for this scholarship must meet the following meet the following requirements:

Reside in one of the following Kansas counties; Saline, Ottawa, Cloud, Republic, Jewell, Mitchell, Lincoln, Ellsworth or Dickinson, be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and meet the definition of disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Scholarship recipients may use the funds toward any credentialed post-secondary program, including college, university, community college, vocational training or cosmetology school. Multiple winners may be selected, and awards of up to $1,250 each will be made directly to the educational institution.

The Saline County Health Department released their quarterly update regarding highlights of clinical services,&nbsp;WIC, child care licensing, maternal and child health, public education, emergency preparedness and administration.

On Tuesday, the Health Department presented the update in front of County Commissioners.&nbsp;

The public information officer reported over 40 earned media stories this quarter, including at least 10 television appearances. National County Government Month was marked by a coordinated campaign that resulted in over 300 new social media followers in April. On the administrative side, Health Department leadership continues early planning for a new building, including site visits to other health departments. The department has seen international interest in its public health podcast, with downloads now in nine countries. Staff also presented at multiple state and national conferences and continue work on grants and the county’s budget.

Looking ahead, the Health Department will begin tick surveillance this summer, rather than its usual mosquito monitoring. An informational update on the opioid task force and funding is scheduled for June 17. Building planning and grant development are also ongoing.

As of May, the Health Department has brought in $1,568,517.87 in revenue (46.84% of projected) and spent $1,184,214.12 (34.98%). 

The department expects to receive its typical Aid to Local funding despite the upcoming expiration of two federal grants on June 30.
