A rural Saline County man lost a combine to fire Wednesday morning south of Salina.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan  said this morning that deputies and personnel from Rural Fire District No. 2 were sent to the 1900 block of E. Hedberg Road at approximately 6:19 a.m. Wednesday for the report of a combine on fire in a field.

The combine's owner is Scott Peterson, 48, of rural Saline County. No known cause of the fire was identified, but Soldan did say it was highly likely the fire started in the combine's engine compartment.

Some wheat stubble was burnt in the area of the combine, but no wheat was lost because there was no wheat in the combine, Soldan said.

The 1988 John Deere combine, valued at $15,000, had been parked overnight and was deemed a total loss due to the extensive damage caused by the fire.
